The location of Australian Space Agency was finally revealed.
As reported, Prime Minister Scott Morison has announced that Adelaide will be the home of Australia’s new space agency.
This just reinforces South Australia’s long-standing contribution to the nation’s space journey.
The state is the ideal location for the new Agency as it is a key hub for innovation and the technology industry, which will set the country’s space industry to hit new heights.
Moreover, the Agency is going to open doors for local businesses and Australian access to the US$ 345 billion global space industry.
The A$ 41 million investment of the Australian government into the Agency will act as a launching pad to triple Australia’s space economy to A$ 12 billion and create up to 20,000 jobs by 2030.
To be located at Lot Fourteen at the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site, the Agency is part of the plan for a stronger economy for South Australia and the country which is about delivering long-term, high-wage, high-skills jobs.
Furthermore, it is key to the new Adelaide City Deal, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Prime Minister and the South Australian Premier Steven Marshall.
The MoU was aimed at turbo-charging Adelaide’s economy and driving long term investment in the city.
The South Australian Premier added that a long-term investment in Adelaide and its space sector would drive entrepreneurship and innovation while enhancing the city’s liveability.
The state is the ideal location for the Australian Space Agency since it already has a range of local space industry businesses established as well as a rapidly growing defence industry sector.
Both the space and defence sectors will be launched to the next level with the establishment of the headquarters of the Australian Space Agency in South Australia.
The Premier is looking forward to working with the Federal Government, industry and the education sector to capitalise on this incredible opportunity for the state.
Adelaide was chosen to host the Agency after putting forward the strongest case.
It is already home for more than 60 organisations and 800 employees in the space sector and this decision builds on the very strong technology and defence presence in the state.
Australia’s science, research and technology sectors are fundamental in improving the competitiveness of Australian businesses.
These flourishing sectors can only continue to expand with the government’s strategic and strong economic management.
There is commitment to growing the country’s space sector.
The Government is also investing A$ 260 million to develop world leading satellite capabilities and to significantly increase GPS accuracy in the cities and regional areas.
Adelaide’s greatest strengths such as its cultural depth, research excellence and commercial potential will be harnessed because of the redevelopment of the old Royal Adelaide Hospital.
The Agency location and the Adelaide City Deal will align to allow better management of population growth and city planning.
Jobs, infrastructure, services and public spaces are guaranteed to be in place to create a faster-growing, productive and liveable Adelaide.
City Deals are about all three levels of government working together to drive the local economy.
There are many cities benefiting from these deals including Darwin, Townsville, Launceston and Western Sydney.
The Australian Space Agency will be located in Adelaide by mid-2019 and is set to employ 20 full-time equivalent staff in the area.
