Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia’s lead digital economy agency, recently announced the campaign updates on the Ministry of Finance-led Belanjawan 2021 Go eCommerce Onboarding and Shop Malaysia Online initiatives. As of October 2021, the campaigns successfully onboarded more than 500,000 businesses and generated well over 85 million transactions with a Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) worth over RM4.6 billion.
MDEC’s CEO stated that the agency is excited about the latest performance set by the Belanjawan 2021 Go eCommerce and Shop Malaysia Online campaigns. It serves as a clear testament that the incentives injected by the Government and participating partners onto eCommerce and ePayment partners have had their intended outcome of aiding economic recovery and we will continue to break targets set before the campaigns end on 31 December 2021.
The Government remains cognizant of the needs of the industry and the need to continue to aid recovery and catalyse growth post-pandemic and has announced an increased allocation under the 2022 Budget accordingly.
As the lead digital economy agency of the nation, MDEC will continue to push forward our eCommerce agenda and grow its ecosystems, serving the needs of Keluarga Malaysia, one that is Prosperous, Inclusive and Sustainable, he added.
As part of the Belanjawan 2021 (National Budget) initiatives, the campaigns will see the Government injecting an incentive package worth RM200 million aimed at providing support to the Malaysian businesses from various sectors to onboard onto eCommerce and ePayment platforms to enhance their sales capability in eCommerce and help boost their sales. RM100 million has also been allocated to assist local businesses to onboard onto the eCommerce platform via the Go-eCommerce campaign.
The data collected to date show that over 500,000 sellers have been onboarded onto the campaigns and of this, over 320,000 are new sellers on the eCommerce platform. The campaigns also registered 157,566 women entrepreneurs, far surpassing the target to onboard 30,000 in 2021.
The Belanjawan 2021 Go eCommerce Onboarding and Shop Malaysia Online campaigns have generated over RM4.6 billion worth of GMV via more than 85 million transactions as of October 2021, breaking the initial target of generating RM1 Billion worth of GMV through 10 million transactions. A total of 32 eCommerce partners are on board.
In April 2021, The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) announced the launch of the #SayaDigital Movement on a national level. This initiative had been originally introduced to improve the digital skills of Malaysians, enabling them to seize opportunities in the digital economy.
It also includes being fully aligned with the country’s ongoing economic recovery plan. This initiative will provide strong support to the Malaysian Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL) that the Prime Minister announced in February 2021.
MDEC’s implementation programme is strongly supported by the Prime Minister’s Department; Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia; Ministry of Rural Development and Community; and Rural Internet Center. This is due to its ongoing focus on four main themes, namely, Digital Simplifies Life; Digital Increases Income; Digital Empowers Careers; and Digital Expands Business.
The programme is designed to get the B40 group, youths and senior citizens involved with the digital economy. To kickstart the momentum of #SayaDigital, three pilot programmes were held to raise the digital literacy awareness involving 301 participants, with the latest being held at Kampung Desa Temuan in Bukit Lanjan last month.
The participants attended a series of interactive workshops that exposed them to the digital skills needed to face challenges in the new normal.
This year’s #SayaDigital Movement focuses on four components, namely, training young people to become “Geng #SayaDigital” volunteers; creating awareness through digital literacy activities; conducting digital readiness assessments; and providing basic digital skills training to the community.
