Digital Democracy: Indonesia Enhancing Public Communication

Approaching the date of February 14th, 2024, scheduled for the General Elections (Pemilu), all ministries are thoroughly preparing to ensure everything related to the elections runs smoothly. One aspect that receives attention is how people can utilise the digital world positively to support the smoothness and success of the 2024 elections. Therefore, the government has taken the initiative to create an online guidebook to provide assistance and information to the public.

The Directorate of Information and Public Communication of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo), Usman Kansong, prepared the online guide for the 2024 General Elections to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public communication regarding the elections. The guide will take the form of an e-book containing essential information about the 2024 elections, such as the election date, the number of participants, and the number of political parties involved.

“We will definitely create a special e-book guide for the 2024 elections. It will contain information about the election date, the number of participants, the number of political parties involved, and more,” explained Usman.

The objective of the online guide is to provide comprehensive and clear general information to the public regarding the 2024 Simultaneous Elections. Therefore, it assists the community in understanding the electoral process thoroughly and ensuring more effective participation in the democratic process. It also serves as a valuable reference for individuals, community groups, and relevant institutions preparing for the 2024 elections.

This guide enables the public to access accurate and up-to-date information about the elections more easily, thus increasing awareness and active participation in the country’s political process.

Furthermore, Usman also emphasised that through this online guidebook, the government can counter and provide information regarding hoax news during the elections. For example, it will include ways to filter out hoax news and its characteristics.

“Along with the team, we are also involved in compiling information to identify news that falls under political hoaxes or not,” said Usman.

Furthermore, to maintain the quality and relevance of the information, this online guidebook will also be periodically updated with the developments in the situation and the needs of the elections. Usman stated that the online guide is designed as a living document.

It means the government will regularly update the information to reflect the evolving situation and conditions related to the event. The guidebook will always provide the most up-to-date information and assist the public in understanding the electoral process comprehensively.

The online guidebook for the 2024 elections is not the first online guide created by the Directorate General of Information and Public Communication (Ditjen IKP). Previously, Ditjen IKP has published several online guidebooks for important events in Indonesia to strengthen public communication.

In 2022, for instance, Ditjen IKP released several online guidebooks, including G20pedia, which summarised the activities of the G20 when it took place in Indonesia. Additionally, there is also the ASEANPedia guidebook that delves into the history and Indonesia’s Presidency in ASEAN 2023, as well as the latest online guidebook titled “Mudik Aman Berkesan 2023” (Safe and Memorable Homecoming 2023), which is related to the safe and comfortable implementation of the homecoming tradition in 2023.

Usman emphasised that the ultimate goal of the online guide is to encourage and motivate the public to exercise their right to vote in Indonesia’s largest democratic event. By providing comprehensive information and guidance on the electoral process, Usman believes it can empower citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and actively participate in the democratic process.
