The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) announced that it has joined hands with the Hong Kong Branch of a major commercial bank.
The two worked to organise the bank’s first academic-industry collaborated cybersecurity competition for students.
The bank, founded in February 2013 and is a fully licensed bank in Hong Kong. Headquartered in Beijing, China Everbright Bank leverages the strong capital positions and the extensive clienteles of the parent group, the bank’s base in the international financial market of Hong Kong, focusing on the wholesale banking business.
The bank provides various services including corporate financing, syndicated loan, debt capital market products, FX products, interest rate products, trade finance, RMB services, etc. It also actively promotes the cross-border business and offera full range of customized financial solutions.
Amid the growing threats of cyber-attacks, the competition Cyber Defenders Challenge – Team-Up for the Good Fight aimed to promote cybersecurity awareness and provide an opportunity for students at HKUST to address some real-world threats faced by information security experts.
The full-day event was held at HKUST, where IT experts from the bank were invited to provide training and share their real-life experiences in protecting their customers from hackers and compliance of best practices. In addition, a cybersecurity company provided technical support for the competition.
Officiating the kick-off ceremony, the Dean of the HKUST Business School stated that school not only seeks to develop talent who are capable of supporting the city’s economic and social development but also assist in addressing the new challenges that confront corporations in today’s digital economy.
As a result of the exceptional opportunity provided by the bank, HKUST students were able to learn a different facet of problems faced by corporations cyber risks.
The Chief Risk Officer and Managing Director of the bank noted that the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a world-class university with first-class technology disciplines and top research institutions.
The bank seized the opportunity to collaborate with HKUST to carry out financial technology innovation cooperation and initiatives, to build a financial technology ecosystem integrating ‘production, study and research’, to promote the construction of a financial technology incubation platform, and to cultivate practical financial technology talents.
The 20 two-member teams, recruited from across the University, were tasked to defend against a series of complex cyber and email attacks in a computer-simulated environment. The top three teams were rewarded with fabulous prizes and internship opportunities provided by the bank.
