In a strategic move to bolster bilateral relations and advance technology in Indonesia, Minister of Communication and Informatics (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi represented the Indonesian government in a bilateral meeting with representatives from China. The meeting aimed to invite China to collaborate in investing in and developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
To strengthen this collaboration, Menkominfo Budi Arie has planned a working visit to Shanghai in June 2024. This visit is not merely a formal gesture but a strategic endeavour to delve into various aspects of digital cooperation with China. Additionally, the visit is intended to broaden understanding of the latest technologies and explore more concrete collaboration opportunities. “Hopefully, this meeting will lead to better cooperation for mutual success,” Budi said.
The bilateral meeting between Indonesia and China took place in May as part of Menkominfo’s working visit to Geneva, Switzerland. During the meeting, Menkominfo engaged in discussions with the Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China, Shan Zhongde, and his team.
Generally, Menkominfo Budi Arie outlined the various potentials Indonesia holds in AI development. This includes digital talents, which are believed to bring significant progress. He also highlighted how AI can be utilised to maximise Indonesia’s digital economy, pushing the country to transform from a developing nation into a developed one.
In terms of regulation, Indonesia is beginning to draft clear rules for AI innovation development. One concrete step taken is the release of a code of ethics for AI utilisation by industry players. This regulation aims to ensure that AI technology development considers ethical and sustainable aspects. With this regulation, AI development in Indonesia can proceed more directly and responsibly.
Menkominfo Budi Arie also underlined the importance of inclusive and equitable technology development across all regions of Indonesia. The situation and potential presented are expected to attract China’s interest in supporting Indonesia’s digitalisation development, especially in remote areas that still require technological infrastructure. Development in remote regions is considered crucial to ensure that all Indonesian citizens can benefit from digital technology advancements.
Responding to this invitation, China’s Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Shan Zhongde, stated that his country is interested in supporting Indonesia in its digital transformation. Shan Zhongde expressed that China is interested in not only AI development but also in enhancing connectivity through the use of 5G and 6G technologies in the telecommunications sector.
As a form of commitment, Shan Zhongde invited Indonesia to send a delegation to an international forum on the digital and AI industry to be held in early September in China. This international forum is envisioned to be a platform for both countries to share knowledge and experiences and discuss further collaboration opportunities.
Through this collaboration, both countries are expected to foster innovations that would be beneficial to their societies. Budi Arie expressed his confidence that this collaboration will not only economically benefit both countries but also strengthen their positions globally in terms of technological innovation.
Furthermore, this collaboration is expected to open new opportunities for digital talents in Indonesia to learn and grow alongside experts from China. This will enable Indonesia to accelerate its digital transformation and compete in the increasingly competitive digital economy era.
With firm commitments from both countries, this collaboration is expected to proceed smoothly and yield positive results. Menkominfo Budi Arie concluded his statement with optimism that this cooperation will bring significant benefits to both countries, particularly in accelerating the development of digital technology and artificial intelligence in Indonesia.
