The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) announced a collaboration with the Huizhou Municipal People’s Government and the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone (Daya Bay Development Zone) to establish the “Hong Kong Polytechnic University Daya Bay Institute of Technology and Innovation” (the Institute). This partnership aims to leverage the technological and research strengths of PolyU and the industrial foundation of Huizhou to foster innovation and technological advancement.
PolyU’s President detailed the university’s latest developments and strategic objectives for expanding into mainland China. He emphasised PolyU’s commitment to promoting technological innovation and nurturing research talent, highlighting the university’s distinctive strengths in basic research and innovation entrepreneurship.
PolyU aims to contribute significantly to the nation’s high-quality development through these efforts. The establishment of the Institute is seen as a strategic move to combine the strengths of PolyU and Huizhou, facilitating the transformation of scientific research into practical applications and driving local industrial development. The Institute is expected to be a key driver of technological and industrial advancement in Huizhou, fostering mutual benefits for both parties.
The Secretary of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Director of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal People’s Congress praised PolyU for its world-class innovative talent and robust research capabilities. He pointed out that Huizhou has a solid modern industrial base and extensive application scenarios for innovation.
The collaboration to establish the Institute is expected to significantly enhance complementary strengths. The Institute will concentrate on the industrial development directions of Huizhou, utilizing PolyU’s talent and research strengths to promote the commercialisation of scientific research outcomes in Huizhou, accelerating the region’s growth as a new hub for high-quality development in Guangdong. Furthermore, it aims to attract and integrate high-end scientific and technological innovation resources both domestically and internationally, fostering a new generation of engineers and technical professionals skilled in future key technologies. The goal is to build the Institute into a premier high-end technological innovation platform in China.
The cooperation agreement was signed by PolyU Vice President (Research and Innovation) Professor Ben Young, the Huizhou Deputy Mayor, and Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Administrative Committee of the Daya Bay Development Zone. Other attendees included PolyU leadership, expert representatives, and representatives from the Huizhou Municipal People’s Government and various enterprises.
Technological innovation is increasingly recognised as a critical driver of social development. At the symposium, PolyU’s Chair Professor of Soft Materials and Devices outlined the construction plan for the Institute. The Institute will focus on several key technological areas, including petrochemicals, new energy materials, artificial intelligence, and intelligent manufacturing.
By collaborating with Huizhou and the Daya Bay Development Zone, the Institute aims to maximise the advantages of all parties involved, implementing an innovation-driven development strategy. This strategy includes fostering collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research institutions. The goal is to make significant contributions to technological innovation in Hong Kong, Huizhou, and across the nation, setting a new standard for university-local government collaboration with notable achievements.
