The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) of Vietnam has recently announced a comprehensive digital transformation plan targeting the energy sector. The ambitious initiative aims to revolutionise administrative procedures by transitioning 90% of them to online platforms through the public services portal. Furthermore, the plan entails the complete digitalisation of all documents about the energy sector, marking a significant leap towards modernisation and efficiency.
Central to the transformation efforts is the development of a synchronised information system encompassing various facets of the energy industry. This includes gas and oil, petroleum, coal, electricity, renewable energy, and emerging technologies. By integrating these disparate elements into a cohesive digital ecosystem, the MoIT seeks to streamline operations, enhance data accessibility, and foster synergy across the entire energy landscape.
Vietnam has set bold targets for its electricity access index, aiming to elevate its position to among the top three in the ASEAN region by 2025. Presently ranked fourth in ASEAN and 27th globally among 190 countries and territories, Vietnam is poised to make significant strides in expanding electricity access and improving energy infrastructure.
As part of this initiative, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is intensifying efforts to deploy electricity e-meters, to achieve a 95% installation rate by 2025 and reach full coverage by 2030. This technological advancement will empower consumers to monitor their electricity usage conveniently through mobile applications, fostering greater transparency and efficiency in energy consumption.
In alignment with national goals for sustainable development and green growth, the MoIT emphasises the importance of promoting smart production practices, embracing renewable energy solutions, and adopting circular economy principles within the energy sector. To facilitate this transition, the ministry is committed to refining existing mechanisms and policies to create an enabling environment for digital innovation.
Through incentivising energy producers to embrace smart technologies and sustainable practices, the MoIT aims to catalyse a paradigm shift towards more resilient and environmentally friendly energy systems.
A key aspect of the digital transformation agenda involves enhancing the application of information and communication technologies throughout the energy value chain. This includes mechanisms for the utilisation, management, and operation of digital information systems tailored to the specific needs of the energy sector. By harnessing the power of ICT, stakeholders can optimise resource allocation, improve decision-making processes, and unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth.
Vietnam is eagerly pursuing a comprehensive sustainable and alternative energy strategy, both domestically and regionally, to foster environmental resilience and energy security. In line with national ambitions, the People’s Committee of Binh Duong province, in collaboration with the British Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, organised a green energy conference on April 9 to enhance renewable energy utilisation and foster knowledge exchange with sustainability experts.
During the event, a partnership was announced between Eastern International University, Becamex IDC, UK’s Q-Energy, and the British Chamber of Commerce Vietnam for the Vietnam Intelligent Energy Trading Platform for Upscaling Local Energy Storage and EV (VIET PULSE) project. VIET PULSE aims to address Vietnam’s renewable energy challenges by installing solar battery systems, electric vehicle charging stations, and energy storage battery systems.
British Consul General Emily Hamblin emphasised the UK’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s green transition, aligning with the Vietnamese government’s net-zero emission commitment. Vice Chairman Mai Hung Dung highlighted Binh Duong province’s dedication to sustainable development through this collaboration, marking a significant step towards building an environmentally conscious and efficient business environment.
As Vietnam charts its course towards a digital future, the Ministry of Industry and Trade remains steadfast in its commitment to spearheading transformative initiatives that will drive progress and prosperity in the energy sector. Through strategic investments in digital infrastructure, policy reforms, and stakeholder engagement, Vietnam is poised to emerge as a leader in sustainable energy innovation and digitalisation on the global stage.
