The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), through its Telecom Center of Excellence (TCOE), embarked on its pioneering outreach programme for the transformative ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative at the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. This initiative marks a significant step towards revolutionising infrastructure planning and management, aiming to bridge the gap between innovation and planning processes.
The event, themed “Bridging the gap between Innovation and Planning,” commenced with a momentous inauguration ceremony graced by Dr Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of Telecom, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi.
Dr Mittal, in his address, underscored the pivotal role of digital twins in modernising infrastructure and fostering innovation and collaboration. He emphasised the importance of leveraging digital twins and integrated data systems to facilitate informed decision-making processes in infrastructure development.
The outreach programme, a key component of the ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative, aims to engage and foster interest among potential participants. It is strategically planned to host sessions at prominent institutions including IIT Delhi, IIT Bangalore and IIT Hyderabad throughout the month. The programme provides a dynamic platform for networking, collaboration, and inspiration, featuring an array of distinguished speakers and thought leaders from diverse industries.
Throughout the event, attendees delved into various themes, including the integration of real-time data, enhancing digital precision through Building Information Modeling (BIM), and driving innovation in urban planning and management. The programme facilitated insightful discussions and showcased transformative technologies such as smart infrastructure, geospatial mastery, and advanced visualisation techniques.
OpenGov Asia reported that the DoT had launched the pioneering ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative, aimed at revolutionising infrastructure planning and design, in February this year. Sangam represents a paradigm shift in infrastructure development, leveraging Digital Twin technology to optimise planning processes and drive transformative outcomes.
Drawing upon a diverse array of technological advancements such as 5G, IoT, AI, AR/VR, and next-gen computational technologies, Sangam empowers stakeholders to navigate complexities with precision, leveraging real-time data and simulations to inform decision-making and drive innovation.
The initiative signifies a paradigm shift in infrastructure management, heralding the dawn of smarter, more resilient cities. As the telecommunications industry continues to embrace digital transformation, initiatives like Sangam are poised to drive innovation and efficiency, paving the way for a more connected and sustainable future.
Leveraging Digital Twin technology, the initiative aims to create virtual replicas of physical assets for real-time monitoring and analysis, fostering iterative experimentation and feedback loops to achieve optimal outcomes.
Structured in exploratory and demonstration phases, the initiative fosters visionary thinking and tangible use cases, paving the way for practical implementation. The initiative invites Expressions of Interest from a wide spectrum of stakeholders including industry leaders, startups, MSMEs, academia and innovators. Future outreach programmes are scheduled at IIIT Bangalore and IIIT Hyderabad before the EoI submission deadline of March 15, 2024.
The Telecom Center of Excellence (TCOE) serves as a pioneering platform for innovation and collaboration in the telecommunications industry. With a focus on empowering digital transformation and accelerating technological advancements, TCOE drives initiatives that propel the industry towards a more dynamic and inclusive future.
The initiative represents a pivotal moment in India’s trajectory towards sustainable development and technological advancement. Through the utilisation of Digital Twin technology and concerted collaboration across sectors, Sangam sets the stage for a future where infrastructure embodies efficiency, resilience, inclusivity, and equity.
As stakeholders unite to support the shared vision of Sangam, they commence a collaborative endeavour aimed at shaping a brighter and more prosperous journey for generations. Through the integration of advanced technologies, Sangam lays down a strong groundwork for infrastructure planning and design that is prepared for the future, with the potential to transform the infrastructure landscape in India for years ahead.
