The Hong Kong Baptist University’s Department of Physics, in collaboration with the Education Bureau (EDB), has developed six sets of teaching kits designed to enhance technological learning in junior secondary schools. These kits, part of the “Science (S1-3) STEAM Learning Module,” aim to support the 2023/24 academic year launch by EDB.
The teaching materials, which include 3D printable components, teaching videos, and slides, empower teachers to assemble kits, enabling them to deliver the science curriculum effectively while fostering problem-solving and innovation skills in students.
The launch ceremony was held at HKBU in partnership with the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong (IET HK). Distinguished guests, including the Secretary for Education, the President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, the Vice President of HKIE and the Director of International Strategic Marketing and Engagement of IET(HK) attended the event.
The President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU emphasised the goal of providing students with hands-on experiences illustrating how innovation and technology enhance society’s quality of life. The engaging teaching materials are designed to spark students’ interest, cultivate creative thinking, and contribute to the future development of innovation and technology.
The Secretary for Education highlighted the emphasis on engineering education in the STEAM Learning Module, enabling students to grasp fundamental engineering concepts and enhance their data management abilities. The integration of STEAM knowledge and engineering principles encourages creative problem-solving activities, offering practical insights into the applications of innovative technology in daily life.
During his keynote speech, the Acting Dean of Science at HKBU commended the Department of Physics for transforming research achievements into educational kits. These kits aim to integrate cutting-edge technological elements into junior secondary school science education, encouraging students to step outside the classroom for scientific exploration. The goal is to help students understand scientific principles through real-life experiences and practical applications of innovative technologies.
The Department of Physics organised a teaching kits workshop for 20 secondary school teachers on the day of the ceremony. This event showcased HKBU’s commitment to promoting the “Innovation and Technology” module within the “Science (S1-3) STEAM Learning Module.” The six teaching kits, including topics such as “Energy Harvesting from Walking” and “Regenerative Braking System in Electric Vehicles,” were designed to engage students and facilitate active participation.
Teachers can access the learning module website, where explanatory videos and 3D printing information for each kit are available. The website serves as a comprehensive resource, allowing teachers to download, print, and assemble materials independently. To further support teachers, HKBU plans to send representatives to secondary schools for workshops, providing guidance on kit assembly and organising class observation sessions to enhance effective kit utilisation. This collaborative effort between HKBU and EDB represents a significant stride towards advancing tech-centric education and fostering a culture of innovation among students.
