Selangor has introduced its Selangor Government Data Exchange (SelGDX) portal, marking a significant technological advancement. This platform represents a pioneering initiative in Malaysia, designed to enable seamless data sharing across various state agencies and the public sector.
The Menteri Besar emphasised that the development of SelGDX involved the collaboration of over 70 government departments and agencies in Selangor, incorporating more than 30 application programming interfaces (APIs).
During the launch of the portal at the Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC 2023), the Menteri Besar emphasised their vision of enabling the unrestricted exchange of non-sensitive data through the portal. They highlighted that users would have the ability to access information without the necessity of departmental registration or obtaining permissions.
SelGDX became operational on 13 October 2023, offering enhanced security, speed, and precision in data sharing and processing. This innovation aims to promote more efficient and transparent technology utilisation and governance. In addition to its role in facilitating data sharing, access, and processing, SelGDX also promotes the integration of technology within governance practices, enhancing efficiency and transparency.
The implementation of SelGDX is a collaborative effort involving Selangor’s Information Management Division, the State Secretary’s Office, and a strategic partner – the business, enterprise, and public sector solutions unit of a major Malaysian telecom. This collaboration encompasses the design, installation, development, integration, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and support services throughout the project’s development.
The launch of Selangor’s SelGDX portal aligns with the Malaysian government’s strategic goals, particularly its pursuit of digital transformation, enhanced transparency, and improved efficiency in public services. SelGDX serves as an example of Malaysia’s commitment to leveraging technology for streamlined data sharing among government agencies, contributing to the broader objective of improving digital capabilities and fostering innovation within the public sector.
This initiative not only promotes efficient data-driven decision-making but also advances the cause of transparent governance by simplifying data access. Furthermore, the portal’s open data-sharing approach aligns with the government’s vision of public engagement, allowing citizens to access government information and actively participate in policymaking, thus facilitating collaboration and innovation within the nation’s evolving digital landscape.
OpenGov Asia reported earlier that In the first half of 2023, Malaysia attracted investments totalling RM132.6 billion (US$28.4 billion) across various sectors, setting a confident tone for its economic growth. These investments are projected to create approximately 51,853 job opportunities, a testament to Malaysia’s appeal to investors worldwide.
Malaysia’s investment climate is boosted by several factors:
- Pro-Business Policies: The Malaysian government is dedicated to fostering pro-business policies and continually improving the ease of doing business in the country.
- Strategic Location: Situated in Asia, Malaysia boasts robust growth potential, making it an attractive location for investors.
- Hub for Ecosystem and Supply Chain: Malaysia serves as a trusted hub for supply chains, capital, talent, goods, and data.
