The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), a renowned hub for research and technological innovation, has embarked on groundbreaking initiatives that hold immense promise in their respective fields. From unravelling the mysteries of virus transmission to pioneering pharmaceutical breakthroughs and transforming language learning through AI-driven education technology, these research endeavours are set to leave a lasting impact on society.
The first project focuses on the critical issue of understanding the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its implications for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) planning. As COVID-19 continues to pose challenges with its high transmission rates, SIT’s research seeks to shed light on virus transmission routes in various settings.
By utilising computer simulations and studying factors such as ventilation, room layout, face masks, and barriers, the research aims to provide effective recommendations for HVAC designs. This groundbreaking work is supported by the Ministry of Education’s Academic Research Fund.
SIT’s second research endeavour joins hands with experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) to pioneer scalable processes for creating and stabilising microparticle suspensions. These suspensions are integral to controlled-release products, including medicines and agricultural coatings.
The research team is dedicated to enhancing the precision and stability of these particles through cutting-edge methods like nano-emulsification and structured soft matter systems. The potential impact extends to safer and more effective pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. A*STAR Pharma Innovation Programme Singapore supports this groundbreaking research.
In partnership with other institutions, SIT is embarking on a journey to revolutionise language learning through an innovative education technology (edtech) platform called ‘LEARN’ – Language automated Evaluation by generating Answers/questions from caRtooNs. This collaborative platform aims to engage lower primary students in meaningful conversations and enhance their oral proficiency.
LEARN leverages AI technologies, web applications, and gamification to motivate students and improve language skills. The project encompasses teachers, schools, and students/parents and seeks to improve language learning outcomes, leaving a significant impact on Mother Tongue Language (MTL) education. This transformative research is supported by the AI Singapore Programme funded by the National Research Foundation.
Accessibility is another vital aspect of AI-driven EdTech. It provides education to learners who may face barriers to traditional classrooms. This includes students in remote areas with limited access to schools or individuals with physical disabilities. AI helps bridge these gaps by delivering education remotely.
Engagement in learning is greatly improved through AI-driven tools like chatbots and virtual assistants. These tools make learning interactive and engaging, as students can ask questions and receive instant responses, creating a more dynamic learning experience.
One of the key advantages of AI in education is its data-driven insights. AI can analyse vast datasets related to student performance, identifying trends and areas that need improvement. These insights inform teaching strategies, allowing educators to tailor their approaches to better meet students’ needs.
Cost-effectiveness is also an important factor. AI-driven EdTech can reduce the costs associated with traditional education, such as textbooks and physical classroom space. This cost reduction makes education more affordable and accessible to a broader population.
AI-driven education technology extends the concept of lifelong learning. It enables professionals to upskill and reskill, staying relevant in a rapidly changing job market. Continuous learning becomes more achievable through AI-powered platforms.
SIT recognises that AI-powered education technology is transforming the education environment by delivering personalised learning, increasing efficiency, and expanding educational opportunities to a worldwide audience. Because of its versatility and data-driven insights, it empowers both educators and students, making education more accessible, interesting, and productive.
