Semiconductors play a pivotal role in digital technology due to their unique electrical properties. They serve as the bedrock for electronic devices and circuits that underpin digital information processing, storage, and transmission.

This logical framework facilitates computations and operations in digital devices. Semiconductors also facilitate miniaturisation. This miniaturisation trend fosters more powerful and efficient electronics. Moreover, semiconductors are helpful in memory storage, communication technologies, consumer electronics, automation, and research. Their continuous advancements stimulate innovation in diverse fields, making semiconductors indispensable for the modern digital landscape.

Recently, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), through its School of Electrical and Informatics Engineering (STEI), announced the inauguration of the I.C. Design Centre, which is physically located on the 4th floor of the ITB PAU Building. With this step, ITB is taking a significant leap forward in advancing semiconductor technology development in Indonesia.

The I.C. Design Centre is a pivotal focal point in pursuing integrated circuit design development, also known as I.C. design. This area also acts as a hub for interconnection, facilitating collaboration and the exchange of ideas among experts, researchers, and students interested in this field.

The importance of integrated circuit design in the context of modern technology is undeniable. Integrated circuit design enables the development of various types of electronic devices used in our daily lives. It involves creating and arranging transistors, resistors, capacitors, and other components in an integrated configuration, allowing devices to perform complex and vital functions.

Professor Trio Adiono, a professor at STEI ITB, elaborated on the significance of inaugurating the I.C. Design Centre. He emphasised that in an era where activities related to I.C. design are on the rise, initiatives like this hold great significance. As the interactions between work culture and technology continue to grow, establishing a centre like the I.C. Design Centre becomes pivotal to creating an inspiring environment and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

Through the inauguration of the I.C. Design Centre, ITB and STEI showcase their commitment to technological advancement in Indonesia. This endeavour goes beyond facilitating research and development in I.C. design; it’s also about creating an ecosystem where innovation thrives and has tangible impacts on society. This step will serve as a foundation for further advancements in semiconductor technology within the country.

They declared the ITB Design Centre as an ecosystem aimed at further enhancing the value of digital devices. “So here, we are focusing on human resources in the field of chip design capable of producing microchips, which are the brains of digital products. There are several chips and finished product lines, such as medical products and ICT infrastructure products, and we are also addressing needs in these areas.”

They have previously conducted various surveys and visits to several advanced countries for benchmarking in the semiconductor field. This is because the use of semiconductor devices has significantly impacted industries globally.

“To build this high technology, we need help doing it,” Professor Trio said. “In technology, there’s something called a supply chain. So, some conduct research, some manufacture, some sell globally, and so on. Therefore, we can also act as an industry that absorbs technology.”

The ITB Rector also attended the inauguration of the ITB IC Design Centre, Prof Reini Wirahadikusumah, PhD, as well as the Vice-Rector for Finance, Planning, and Development, Prof Ir Muhamad Abduh, MT, PhD.

Prof Reini also appreciates the presence of this new ecosystem in the semiconductor field, particularly in I.C. design. She is optimistic that this moment can rekindle the utilisation of technology, especially in the semiconductor domain. “Especially in this digital era. Hopefully, there will be even more ITB professionals who can compete globally in this field,” she stated.
