During the National Resilience Seminar themed “Digital Transformation of Indonesia 2045,” Deputy Sulistyo from the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) addressed cybersecurity, delving into the strategic significance of Cryptographic Autonomy as a Competitive Advantage to reinforce backing for the 2045 Cybersecurity Roadmap.
Deputy Sulistyo clarified that the scope of cryptographic policy encompasses essential aspects such as public access to encryption technology, encryption strength standards, licensing prerequisites, encryption technology/algorithms registration, import-export controls, service provider obligations to aid law enforcement, user responsibilities in supporting law enforcement, and other vital regulations.
Cryptography involves employing cryptographic algorithms to safeguard information, guaranteeing confidentiality, integrity, authentication and non-repudiation across diverse applications. Encryption converts readable data (plaintext) into encoded data (ciphertext), with decryption reversing the process, serving as a cornerstone for data security, secure communication, digital signatures, secure transactions, and blockchain technology. Its pivotal role in modern digital security is evident as it evolves with technology, creating new algorithms to counter emerging threats and ensure the security of digital communication and data storage.
In the effort to establish an independent Indonesian cyberspace, the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) partners with crucial stakeholders to formulate an extensive roadmap that spans from 2019 to 2045, aiming to achieve the overarching goal of “Achieving World-Class Indonesian Cyber Sovereignty by 2045.”
During three phases, the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) is committed to enhancing Indonesia’s cyber capabilities and ensuring technological sovereignty. The initial period, the National Cyber and Encryption Technology Stabilisation Period (2019-2025), focuses on fortifying the foundational aspects of cybersecurity and encryption, establishing a robust framework that forms the bedrock for future advancements.
As the nation moves into the second phase, known as the National Cyber and Encryption Technology Integration Period (2026-2035), the objective is to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge technologies into Indonesia’s cyber domain, elaborated Deputy Sulistyo. This entails the harmonious convergence of state-of-the-art encryption methodologies, advanced threat detection systems, and innovative data protection techniques. Through the establishment of a cohesive ecosystem, Indonesia seeks to strengthen its standing in the global cybersecurity landscape and establish a solid foundation for sustained growth and innovation.
The third phase, the National Cyber and Encryption Technology Autonomy Period (2036-2045), embodies the culmination of Indonesia’s journey towards technological self-reliance. With an eye on the horizon of 2045, this phase strives to achieve a state where Indonesia exercises full autonomy in its cybersecurity endeavours. It envisions creating and deploying homegrown, cutting-edge encryption technologies, contributing not only to the nation’s security but also positioning Indonesia as a beacon of cybersecurity expertise on the global stage.
This comprehensive roadmap is not just a technical strategy. it symbolises Indonesia’s commitment to a digitally empowered and secure future. Throughout these designated intervals, the central focus will be strengthening Indonesia’s cyber capabilities, ensuring technological sovereignty, and attaining a robust and internationally recognised position in cybersecurity and encryption.
By meticulously adhering to this strategic roadmap, Indonesia aims to establish itself as a significant player within the global cybersecurity landscape, safeguarding its digital assets, fostering innovation, and advancing its digital infrastructure. The steadfast commitment to this comprehensive approach in securing the cyber domain underscores the government’s unwavering determination to forge a technologically advanced and secure future for the country.
