The collaborative efforts of the Malaysian government’s 5G Implementation Task Force, jointly chaired by the Secretary-General of the Treasury and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communications and Digital, have achieved significant milestones in the realm of cutting-edge technology. This includes reaching agreements concerning equity participation in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and establishing a pivotal 5G access agreement with DNB.
Leading telecommunications giants are now in the final stages of solidifying their shareholding within DNB. This strategic move sets the stage for their active involvement in bolstering the development of the 5G network by DNB. The ultimate goal is to attain a remarkable 80% coverage across densely populated areas by the close of 2023.
This endeavour will pave the way for the subsequent transition to a dynamic dual-network model as early as January 2024. To ensure seamless execution, the respective companies are committed to implementing effective governance measures.
As of the mid-year mark in 2023, DNB has exhibited commendable progress in erecting the foundational infrastructure for the 5G network. Impressively, this effort has already led to coverage spanning 64.7% of populated regions. This significant leap forward puts DNB squarely on course to realize the predetermined targets set forth.
Underscoring their commitment to technological advancement, another telecom has made steps in commencing the process of inking a pivotal 5G access agreement with DNB. This initiative follows the successful resolution of pertinent issues surrounding this collaboration on 11 July 2023.
The impending fruition of this agreement will usher in a transformative era for Maxis customers, who will soon have the privilege of harnessing the power of 5G. The upcoming Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) represents a crucial juncture where shareholder approval will pave the way for the rollout of 5G services to eager clientele.
It’s noteworthy that telecommunications companies have already been at the forefront of offering 5G services to their clientele. Their proactive stance, demonstrated by their swift signing of 5G access agreements with DNB last year, underscores their commitment to remaining competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital (MCD), in tandem with all stakeholders, remains unwavering in its mission to realise the government’s tech-driven aspirations. Through an inclusive, transparent, and comprehensive approach, MCD ensures that the metamorphosis brought about by this technological revolution benefits every stratum of Malaysian society. The commitment to quality remains paramount, as the government strives to provide the best possible services to its citizens, thus epitomising the essence of a “Digital Nasional.”
Malaysia’s journey into the realms of groundbreaking technology through the establishment of a robust 5G infrastructure is marked by substantial achievements. The collaborative efforts of telecommunications giants, the commitment to shareholder approval, and the overarching dedication to an all-encompassing technological transformation lay the foundation for an interconnected, digitally empowered Malaysia. The nation’s progression is a testament to the harmonious synergy between governance and technological innovation, positioning Malaysia as a prominent player in the global tech landscape.
The advancements in Malaysia’s 5G technology significantly shape citizens’ experiences by enhancing connectivity, expanding access to services, and enabling technological empowerment. With broader coverage and high-speed internet, citizens can access innovative services and healthcare remotely, and enjoy seamless entertainment. 5G also improves government interactions, fosters economic growth, and promotes digital inclusion. This transformative shift empowers citizens, accelerates progress, and strengthens the nation’s technological landscape.
