Online gambling has become rampant in Indonesia, and it is considered illegal. Apart from being illegal, engaging in online gambling is also dangerous. Not only can it lead to addiction, but participants also risk falling victim to cybercrime and experiencing mental disturbances after playing.

In response to this issue, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemenkominfo) continues to monitor and block access to all forms of online gambling content. Moreover, they coordinate with law enforcement authorities.

Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, emphasised the government’s commitment to eradicating online gambling content. However, Kemenkominfo acknowledges that online gambling is challenging to eradicate as they offer their services through private messages, making their activities difficult to monitor.

Kemenkominfo takes a comprehensive approach to handling content that includes gambling elements, such as, they strictly adhere to the regulations outlined in the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, particularly focusing on Article 27 paragraph (2), which has been updated and amended through the ITE Law. These legal provisions provide a solid framework for addressing online gambling activities, ensuring violators are held accountable under the law.

Additionally, Kemenkominfo actively implements disconnection measures based on the guidelines established by Government Regulation No. 71 of 2019 and Ministerial Regulation No. 5 of 2020. These specific regulations have been designed to address the smooth operation and regulation of electronic transactions and private electronic systems.

By enforcing these regulations, Kemenkominfo aims to maintain a secure and lawful digital environment, safeguarding the interests of both users and the broader community.

Minister Budi Arie Setiadi acknowledged the challenges posed by online gambling activities, emphasising that Kemenkominfo is also dedicated to addressing complaints about the misuse of bank account accounts for unlawful purposes.

These complaints may involve gambling content distributed through platforms like cekrekening.id. Through a concerted effort, Kemenkominfo endeavours to investigate and resolve such issues promptly and responsibly.

“From January to July 17, 2023, Kemenkominfo has received 1,859 complaints concerning the improper use of bank accounts for online gambling activities. These complaints make up a portion of the 1,914 complaints received by Kemenkominfo until the year 2023,” Budi clarified.

Therefore, according to Minister Budi Arie Setiadi, effectively dealing with online gambling content necessitates active participation from the public. Kemenkominfo recognises the importance of collective efforts in curbing the proliferation of online gambling and encourages the public to play an active role in this endeavour. By reporting any instances of online gambling content that they come across, individuals can help safeguard the digital landscape from harmful practices and illegal activities.

Moreover, the Ministry advocates for the responsible and productive use of the internet among the public. Emphasising the transformative power of technology, Kemenkominfo urges individuals to utilise the vast resources available online to enrich their knowledge, skills, and overall experiences. By embracing the positive aspects of the internet, such as educational resources, professional development opportunities, and meaningful connections, users can harness the true potential of the digital world.

Through this combined effort, the Ministry seeks to foster a safer and more responsible digital environment for all users. By empowering the public to be vigilant against online gambling content and promoting the constructive utilisation of the internet, Kemenkominfo envisions a digital landscape that thrives on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and lawful practices, ultimately benefitting society as a whole.

“For tackling this cybercrime, solving the problem alone is not enough. Hence, we kindly request the community to consistently aid our efforts by reporting any instances of online gambling content and making responsible and productive use of the internet,” Budi emphasised.
