The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) officially established the New Industrialisation Development Centre (NI Centre) in Hong Kong. Its primary objective is to address the challenges faced by businesses in terms of technology, talent, and resources during their upgrading and transformation processes.
By doing so, the NI Centre aims to assist enterprises in adopting smart manufacturing practices and enhancing their sustainability capabilities. This will enable them to proactively respond to the changing global supply chain, which increasingly emphasises digitalisation and sustainability.
The NI Centre is dedicated to collaborating closely with the HKSAR Government to realise the goals set forth in the “Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint.” Its efforts will contribute to the high-quality development of Hong Kong’s economy and facilitate the optimisation and advancement of industrial chains within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Recently, Hong Kong has actively pursued the promotion of reindustrialisation by leveraging technology to address challenges such as rising labour costs, talent recruitment difficulties, and high land-use expenses.
The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has played a vital role in supporting these initiatives, assisting enterprises in transitioning to smart manufacturing and enhancing their economic performance. By embracing technology-driven solutions, businesses have been able to overcome these obstacles and achieve improved financial outcomes.
New industrialisation builds upon the achievements of Reindustrialisation initiatives and focuses on sustainable smart manufacturing. It involves the adoption of advanced technologies such as the industrial internet of things (IIoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and data analysis to drive enterprises and industrial chains towards smart production and environmentally-friendly development.
By embracing new industrialisation, businesses can adapt to market trends characterised by customised needs, reduced factory-to-consumer time, lower costs, increased market demand, and greater economic returns.
The NI Centre recognises the importance of enhancing sustainable development capabilities and actively supports the country and the HKSAR in achieving policy objectives related to peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality.
Throughout the entire product life cycle, from design and manufacturing to sales, usage, recycling, and reuse, emphasis is placed on reducing resource consumption and environmental pollution. This approach creates a win-win situation where economic gains are achieved alongside environmental benefits.
The Chief Digital Officer of HKPC stated that the establishment of the NI Centre marks a significant milestone in Hong Kong’s journey towards new industrialisation. He emphasised that new industrialisation extends beyond emerging industries and includes traditional sectors that can leverage advanced technologies to digitise, streamline, and adopt eco-friendly production processes.
The NI Centre will serve as a facilitator and catalyst for Hong Kong, utilising its technological expertise and extensive experience in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enhance the appeal of the “Made-in-Hong Kong” brand.
The Head of NI Centre at HKPC stated that the Council has successfully supported over 150 Hong Kong enterprises across various industries in achieving smart manufacturing in the Greater Bay Area. The NI Centre aims to showcase these success stories and encourage more industry partners to embrace new industrialisation.
It will conduct industry studies, provide technology solutions, FutureSkills training, and government funding to address enterprise challenges. The NI Centre also aims to expand the talent pool to meet the industry’s new industrialisation requirements.
The NI Centre aligns with the objectives outlined in the Blueprint, focusing on new industrialisation as one of the key development directions. Its main goals include supporting enterprises in establishing smart production lines, enhancing sustainable development capabilities, and upgrading the manufacturing industry in Hong Kong.
The NI Centre also aims to promote emerging industries such as new energy and life and health technology, attracting top-notch enterprises to set up operations in Hong Kong.
By providing new industrialisation certification training and expanding the talent pool, it contributes to building a skilled workforce. Additionally, the NI Centre facilitates innovative collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutes in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) to transform research and development outcomes. Acting as a bridge between the government and the industry, it enhances support and cooperation.
Both the NI Centre and HKPC are committed to providing comprehensive support to the HKSAR Government in advancing new industrialisation in Hong Kong and the GBA. Their joint efforts aim to develop the digital economy, strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an International Innovation and Technology Centre, optimise and upgrade industrial chains in the GBA, and contribute to China’s journey towards becoming an industrial powerhouse with high-quality development.
