Cybersecurity plays a vital role in protecting various forms of data from theft and loss, particularly in the government sector. It includes safeguarding sensitive data, protected health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), intellectual property, personal information, and government and business information systems.

In light of this, the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), represented by Acting Director of Cyber Security and Cryptography Strategy, Sigit Kurniawan, along with the staff of the Cyber Security and Cryptography Strategy Directorate, received courtesy calls from the Embassy of Japan and the Embassy of Canada. Both calls occurred last Friday at the Inspirational House of the BSSN Office in Sawangan, Depok, West Java.

The first Courtesy Call was made by the Embassy of Japan in Jakarta, represented by First Secretary Ogawa Yuichiro. The Japanese delegation-initiated discussions by highlighting the positive progress in bilateral cyber security relations between Indonesia and Japan. They expressed their support for collaboration in cyber security, particularly in enhancing Indonesia’s capacity and capabilities in cyber security.

In the subsequent Courtesy Call, the Canadian delegation, represented by the Trade Commissioner of the Embassy of Canada, Julia Pangkey, expressed their interest in collaborating on defence and cyber security between Indonesia and Canada. During the meeting, Julia also emphasised that the privacy act is one of the current focuses of the Canadian government. This topic became an intriguing subject for further discussion between the two countries.

In response, Sigit expressed similar sentiments and showed interest in sharing best practices to strengthen national cyber security, especially in handling recent cyber incidents, as well as enhancing the capacity and capabilities of cyber security and cryptography human resources.

“We appreciate Japan’s and Canada’s willingness to support BSSN’s efforts in strengthening cyber security in Indonesia,” said Sigit in his statement.

Not only with Japan and Canada, Indonesia’s cyber security is also enhancing its collaboration with the United Kingdom. Recently, the State Cyber and Cryptography Agency (BSSN) of Indonesia has agreed to establish cooperation in cyber security with the government of the United Kingdom through the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

This meeting generated eight areas of cooperation – National Cyber Strategy Development and Implementation, Cyber Threat Landscape, Cyber Governance, Government and Industry Partnership, Incident Management, Cybercrime, Promotion of Cyber Security Awareness, Capacity Building through Experience Exchange and Best Practices, and Research on Cyber Security.

According to the Head of BSSN, Hinsa Siburian, one of the objectives of the MoU was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience. “This programme aims to enhance cyber security capacity through exchanging knowledge and experience between the two countries.”

This collaboration signified the strong commitment of both countries to prioritise and enhance cyber security. It highlighted their mutual recognition of the importance of addressing cyber security challenges and working together to strengthen defences, promote information sharing, and develop robust cyber security strategies. The cooperation reflected their shared vision of creating a safer digital landscape and protecting critical infrastructure from evolving cyber threats.

According to Sigit, implementing cybersecurity ensures the safety and protection of all data. It includes guarding against financial crimes such as staff embezzlement and unauthorised access to corporate account information, which can lead to identity theft.

In general, there are certain drawbacks associated with cyber security. For instance, configuring firewalls can be challenging. Improperly configured firewalls may restrict users from engaging in specific internet activities until the firewall settings are adjusted appropriately. Additionally, cyber security measures can slow down the system more significantly than before. Therefore, through this collaboration, Sigit optimists to enhance cyber security in Indonesia.
