The National University of Singapore (NUS) is one of only nine top universities in the world to participate in the Science Postdoctoral Fellowship programme, which uses cutting-edge AI technologies to accelerate academic breakthroughs in STEM fields.
This fellowship was established to assist postdoctoral scholars whose work integrates AI methods into the hard sciences including physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Additionally, it will give the specialists at the forefront of scientific research access to AI technologies and training.
Chosen as the inaugural group of partners for this distinguished initiative are nine educational institutions from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. Up to 20 postdoctoral fellows from each of the nine universities will receive financing from the Fellowship programme, worth a total of S$148 million.
NUS and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore will work together to manage the resources provided through the Fellowship programme for up to 110 postdoctoral fellowship posts over a six-year period.
By combining expertise and forming partnerships with important business and government partners from diverse disciplines, NUS is dedicated to an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to conducting research and offering quality education. This strategy will help address difficult, real-world challenges.
To use AI for application in a variety of crucial fields, including healthcare and materials research, the University has invested resources in developing AI expertise and building research capacities throughout the years.
Moreover, the NUS N.1 Institute for Health uses cutting-edge AI technology to promote innovation and transform healthcare. To quickly optimise combination therapy designs for infectious diseases, the institute built the IDentif.AI platform, a revolutionary AI platform that brings together physicians, researchers, and engineers.
The Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (I-FIM), a national institute, is the newest National Research Centre of Excellence of NUS. To encourage the use of AI in creating cutting-edge materials for intelligent applications, the I-FIM was founded.
Other multidisciplinary national research initiatives, such as the Centre for Trusted Internet Community (CTIC), Singapore Blockchain Innovation Programme (SBIP), and Quantum Engineering Programme (QEP), have benefited from the use of AI technologies.
In addition to its research capabilities, NUS is committed to expanding the talent pool for AI through a variety of courses offered by its School of Computing and Institute of System Science. These two institutions offer a broad choice of AI courses to fit the needs of participants wishing to advance their AI skills.
The courses’ main goal is to arm students with the theoretical and applied knowledge of AI needed for practical applications in the workplace. Numerous NUS AI researchers are also involved with AI Singapore, a national initiative that Singapore’s National Research Foundation launched to bolster the country’s deep AI capabilities.
Through the fellowship programme, NUS will keep fostering the talents and research skills of scientists from a variety of fields to use cutting-edge AI technologies to hasten scientific advancement and create products that have practical applications.
Meanwhile, OpenGov Asia earlier reported that to support and anchor synchrotron research in the nation, NUS and the National Research Foundation, Singapore (NRF) have launched the National Synchrotron Programme (NSP). An agreement between NUS and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) that grants Singapore researchers priority access to the Australian Synchrotron was inked as part of the launch.
The programme creates a thriving research ecosystem for synchrotrons by bringing together all Singapore-based academic institutions, organisations, and industries. As a result, knowledge will progress, new tools and techniques will be developed, and talent will be developed to propel Singapore’s synchrotron activities around the world.
