The Department of Customer Service’s (DCS) Spatial Services team is enabling 3D digital mapping for subdivision and strata plans through the NSW Planning Portal. The Spatial Services Executive Director stated that Spatial Services’ digitisation of subdivision and strata-related land developments would transform how applicants and assessing authorities visualise applications via the Planning Portal.
As a result of the work in connecting subdivision and strata-related digital mapping to the NSW Planning Portal, people can better understand the impact of Development Applications and Subdivision Certificate Applications while reducing the time it takes to manually review and digitise information, realising a more efficient and customer friendly experience.
Visualisations of draft strata plans can now be rendered in 3D, improving the ability to assess authorities including local councils and private certifiers to interpret what can be very complex plans in paper form as well as enhancing quality checks and enabling more effective community engagement.
Enabling digital mapping of subdivision and strata developments further added to the NSW Government’s commitment to providing people across the State with an online platform where they can access planning services and information from anywhere at any time.
The NSW Planning Portal is an online environment where the community, industry and government can work together to better understand and meet their obligations. It is a convenient alternative to paper-based transactions, which can only take place during business hours and is helping to streamline and enhance existing processes to improve the planning experience for all stakeholders across NSW.
The portal’s digital planning services, mapping tools and reporting tools assist everyone involved in the proposed development and this is helping to improve application determination times, increase the transparency of the planning system and ensure greater accountability of all stakeholders.
The NSW Planning Platform is part of the ePlanning Program which is funded by the DCS Digital Restart Fund (DRF). The NSW Government has allocated AU$2.1 billion across four years to invest in digital transformation projects through the DRF, with the fund targeting smart, simple technology solutions which create efficiencies for customers across the State.
The Spatial Services Executive Director noted, “Spatial Services has already transformed the way we see the world around us with the award-winning Spatial Digital Twin bringing together government data sources to provide insights for developers and residents to support decision-making and plan the communities of the future.”
In December 2021, the NSW Government announced that NSW’s nation-leading Spatial Digital Twin would provide a 4D model for the entire State with an AU$40 million investment from the NSW Digital Restart Fund (DRF).
The Minister for Digital and Customer Service said the NSW Spatial Digital Twin was an evolutionary leap when it came to shaping communities and boosting productivity allowing customers, developers and planners to see into the future, adding that the investment would cement NSW’s position as the world leader when it comes to Spatial Digital Twin technology.
Digital architecture makes it possible to visualise a development digitally before it is physically built, making it easier to plan and predict outcomes of infrastructure projects, right down to viewing how shadows fall, or how much traffic is in an area.
Throughout 2021, the Spatial Digital Twin received 18 million requests for access to 3D datasets. They have been creating a digitally cutting-edge State that will benefit from all the productivity advantages and job creation this technology brings, the Minister said.
