This initiative underscores the substantial progress Indonesia has made in its digital landscape over the past decade. It reflects a commitment to expanding internet access, fostering e-commerce and enhancing digital literacy to ensure inclusive growth for all citizens.

Secretary General Mira Tayyiba explained that the infographic serves as a comprehensive inventory of the Ministry’s key programs, policies, and achievements. “In 2014, internet penetration was around 35%, and by 2024, it has nearly reached 80%. This remarkable increase reflects a substantial leap in digital access,” she stated during the launch at the Ministry’s Main Building in Central Jakarta on September 20, 2024.

The infographic indicates that internet penetration saw a significant surge starting in 2018, following the successful auction of the 2.1 GHz and 2.3 GHz Radio Frequency Spectrum in 2017. “This auction laid the groundwork for enhanced infrastructure, leading to a spike in e-commerce transactions in 2019,” Mira added, noting the impact of President Joko Widodo’s directives in 2016 and 2020 concerning the digital economy and transformation.

The first page of the infographic outlines key directives from President Widodo, focusing on the acceleration of telecommunication infrastructure, e-commerce development, strengthening trade logistics, preparing digital human resources, and expediting regulatory processes. In response, the Ministry of Communication and Information has been implementing various initiatives, including the E-Government Program, Digital Safety and Data Governance, sector digitalisation, e-commerce enhancements, and improved connectivity.

The Indonesian government has implemented several key initiatives to enhance the digital landscape in the country. The infographic also showcases several achievements and offers insights into the various initiatives.

One significant focus has been on the eradication of illegal online gambling activities, demonstrating a concerted effort to maintain a safe digital environment. In parallel, the reorganisation of frequency bands has improved the management and allocation of the radio frequency spectrum, ensuring better connectivity and communication.

Additionally, initiatives like SPBE for Smart Cities are aimed at enhancing urban living through the integration of smart technology, fostering more efficient and sustainable urban environments. The government’s focus on boosting the digital economy includes the promotion of online transportation services, which play a vital role in stimulating economic growth.

Technological advancements in health services also mark significant progress, contributing to improved healthcare delivery and accessibility. Furthermore, the e-commerce landscape has seen a notable increase in participation from Indonesian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the digital marketplace, enabling greater economic opportunities.

To support these developments, infrastructure for digital payments and connectivity has been expanded, facilitating seamless transactions and access to digital services. Lastly, programs aimed at enhancing digital literacy and skill development are essential for equipping the population with the necessary skills to thrive in a digital economy, ensuring that citizens can fully engage with and benefit from these advancements.

Additionally, the infographic highlights government support for startups, the transition from analogue TV broadcasts, and efforts to bolster cybersecurity and national information systems. It highlights the importance of digital literacy and skill creation in a rapidly evolving digital space, illustrating the transformative impact of digital connectivity on Indonesia’s economy.

This launch underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital transformation journey, fostering an inclusive and thriving digital ecosystem for all Indonesians. By prioritising equitable access to technology and digital resources, the initiative aims to empower marginalised communities and stimulate economic growth throughout the country.
