Harnessing Innovation: Quantum Tech to Empower India

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a new initiative, “Quantum Standardisation and Testing Labs”, inviting proposals from Indian academic and research institutions. This initiative aims to accelerate the development and integration of quantum technologies, focusing on enhancing the interoperability, reliability, and security of quantum communication systems.

These labs are envisioned as innovation hubs that will bring together quantum technology developers, testing equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers. Their primary goal is to explore and harness the full potential of quantum technologies to benefit all citizens of India. By establishing benchmarks and protocols, the labs will facilitate the seamless integration of quantum communication elements into existing and future communication networks.

Aligned with the vision for ‘Jai Anushandhan’, the initiative seeks to make India self-reliant in quantum technologies and set global benchmarks in this cutting-edge field. It aims not only to develop secure and efficient quantum communication systems but also to provide advanced technologies that enhance everyday communication, data security, and digital experiences for Indian citizens.

Key Objectives of the Quantum Standardisation and Testing Labs include:

  • Quantum Standardisation: Setting benchmarks and protocols for integrating quantum key distribution, quantum state analysers, optical fibres, and related components into communication networks.
  • Testing Facilities: Developing robust testing facilities to validate quantum concepts, processes, devices, and applications developed by Indian industry, startups, R&D institutions, and academia. These facilities will ensure performance verification under diverse conditions and compliance with national and international standards.

These labs aim to be accessible to industry stakeholders, startups, and local telecom sectors at nominal fees, ensuring widespread benefits from advanced quantum technologies. By supporting indigenous quantum technology solutions, this initiative aims to establish India as a leader in global standards.

Proposed technologies for testing include single photon and entangled photon sources, single-photon detectors, quantum memories, quantum repeaters, and various quantum communication modules.

India’s quantum technology sector has experienced remarkable growth, marked by the emergence of over 40 start-ups in just the last two years, a development with significant global implications.

As OpenGov Asia reported, Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science and Technology, emphasised India’s strong position in quantum technologies and reiterated the strategic importance of the National Quantum Mission in solidifying India’s leadership on the global stage.

The government is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in scientific research and development (R&D), with a notable increase in women’s participation. Over the past decade, initiatives aimed at supporting women scientists through STEM fellowship programs have doubled their engagement.

The introduction of the Common Fellowship Portal has simplified the grant application process, making it easier for more women to pursue funding opportunities. Through the ASPIRE scheme, approximately 300 women scientists are set to receive government research grants spanning three years, enhancing their impact on India’s scientific advancements.

India is dedicated to using innovation to empower society and enhance the quality of life, underpinned by robust government funding, including 900 crores for the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) from 2016 to 2023, fostering science and technology entrepreneurship.

The focus on quantum technology and the rising participation of women in R&D demonstrate India’s steadfast commitment to advancing its scientific and technological capabilities. These initiatives are expected to yield substantial socio-economic benefits, reinforcing India’s global leadership in technology.

With strategic investments and collaborative efforts, India is laying the groundwork for a future-ready workforce and a resilient digital economy, poised to capitalise on emerging opportunities and foster sustainable growth in the years ahead. The Quantum Standardisation and Testing Labs initiative marks a pivotal step in India’s journey towards harnessing quantum technologies for comprehensive societal benefits.
