Gigabit City: Indonesia’s Blueprint for Digital Transformation

Director General of Postal and Informatics Operations at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Dirjen PPI Kemenkominfo), Wayan Toni Supriyanto, has elaborated on a city development concept called “Gigabit City.” This concept aims to accelerate national digital transformation by enhancing digital infrastructure capacity at the city level.

The “Gigabit City” concept encourages local governments and telecommunications providers to establish high-speed network infrastructure, such as gigabit networks. The goal is to provide optimal internet access for the public to engage in digital economic activities.

“A Gigabit City is designed with ultra-fast internet access, meaning speeds can reach up to 1 Gbps. This is an effort to anticipate future technological developments. We must ensure that data transmission needs are not delayed due to slow download speeds and capacities in the digital economy era,” Wayan explained.

The “Gigabit City” concept is also a part of the Indonesia Digital Vision (VID) 2045, initiated by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. VID 2045 serves as a guide to unify national digital development plans towards Indonesia Emas 2045. Through this concept, Indonesia can enhance its digital economic achievements and encourage the public to utilise the latest technological innovations.

Wayan mentioned that this concept was developed after studying how advanced countries like the United States and Singapore successfully boosted their digital economic activities with high-speed internet. Although the idea has yet to be fully implemented in Indonesia, Kemenkominfo has coordinated with various telecommunications providers to find the right implementation strategy for realising Gigabit City in Indonesia.

By realising the “Gigabit City” concept, Indonesia is expected to seize opportunities to boost its digital economy. “Everything is orchestrated in VID 2045, especially since there will be many technological developments in the future, such as AI and the metaverse, which require extraordinary capacity and speed. Therefore, we are developing the Gigabit City concept to face future developments,” said Wayan.

Kemenkominfo emphasises the importance of developing integrated digital infrastructure to achieve this goal. This includes providing extensive fiber optic networks reaching remote areas ensuring that all segments of society have access to high-speed internet. Additionally, this effort involves modernising data centres and implementing cloud technology to improve data efficiency and security.

The “Gigabit City” concept focuses on enhancing the digital economy and improving the quality of life for the public. With fast and reliable internet access, educational, health, and government services can be accessed more efficiently and effectively. For instance, telemedicine can be optimised to provide quality remote health services and online education can be conducted more smoothly without connection disruptions.

Implementing “Gigabit City” also involves collaboration with the government private sector and academia. Telecommunications providers, technology companies, and educational institutions work together to develop innovative solutions that meet local needs. Training and educational programmes are organised to ensure the public can effectively utilise digital technology.

Within the “Gigabit City” ecosystem, technological innovation is driven through various initiatives such as startup incubators, research grants, and accelerator programmes. This aims to create a conducive environment for developing new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain technology.

With the implementation of the “Gigabit City” concept, Indonesia has the potential to become one of the leading digital economies in the world. Developing strong and integrated digital infrastructure will open new opportunities for the public, increase productivity, and encourage innovation across various sectors. Through the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045, these strategic steps will lead Indonesia towards a more advanced and competitive future in the digital era.
