Malaysia Launches Advanced Emergency Response System

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Government of Malaysia and the nation’s leading telecommunications company have formalised an agreement to develop and operate the nation’s new emergency response system, known as the Next Generation Emergency Services 999 (NG999). This system is set to replace the current MERS999, aiming to modernise and improve emergency response capabilities across the country.

The signing of the agreement was witnessed by the Deputy Minister of Communications. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Communications and the telecom’s Executive Vice President signed the agreement. The telco’s Group Chief Executive Officer was also present at the event.

NG999 represents a strategic digital integration that will enhance resource and data sharing among emergency responders and central agencies. The system will incorporate web-based digital maps, caller IDs, geolocation services, and mobile smart apps into the emergency incident handling process. This integration aims to significantly improve the response time of emergency services nationwide.

The telco’s Group CEO expressed the firm’s honour in being selected as the trusted partner by the Malaysian Government for this initiative. He emphasised that NG999 is designed to upgrade the existing MERS999, aiming to deliver more efficient and quicker emergency responses in the future.

The telecom’s role in this project encompasses network and platform infrastructure, call management, and various support services. This comprehensive involvement is intended to ensure continuous efficacy for both the public and emergency responders. The initiative to revitalise Malaysia’s emergency services aligns with telecom’s broader commitment to Digital Malaysia, leveraging advancements in AI and aspiring to become a Digital Powerhouse by 2030.

The transformation of Malaysia’s emergency responses has been driven by the increasing use of mobile and smart devices. The implementation of the NG999 system aligns with international best practices, such as the European Emergency Number Association’s NG112 and the National Emergency Number Association’s NG911 in North America.

NG999 will utilise advanced technologies, including data analytics and AI, to provide faster and more effective emergency responses. These technologies ensure that emergency responders can make every second count during critical moments. The system enhancement draws on the experiences of various government and law enforcement agencies, emergency dispatchers, and the telecom. This upgrade is not just a technological advancement but also a reaffirmation of telecom’s commitment to serving the nation.

To further align with the country’s increasing mobile usage, the company will introduce a new mobile app for NG999. This app will enable registered users to provide updates through text, photos, and videos, enhancing communication between callers and emergency responders. This improved communication is expected to aid emergency responders in their tactical deployment.

The new system is designed to be a world-class emergency response solution, reflecting the telecom’s dedication to improving public safety and emergency services in Malaysia. The collaboration between the telecom and the Malaysian Government highlights a shared vision for a more efficient, responsive, and technologically advanced emergency service infrastructure.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey towards enhancing its emergency response capabilities. By integrating modern technologies and adhering to international best practices, NG999 is poised to set a new standard for emergency services in the region. The telecom’s involvement underscores its role as a key player in the country’s digital transformation, contributing to the national goal of becoming a leading digital nation by 2030.

The development and operation of NG999 by the Malaysian Government and its telecom partner is a strategic move to enhance emergency response systems. Through the integration of advanced technologies and improved communication methods, NG999 aims to provide quicker and more effective responses during emergencies, ultimately contributing to the safety and well-being of the Malaysian public.
