Thailand: Advancing Communities and Digital Initiatives

Mr Phuchapong Nodthaisong, Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Committee, along with Mr Somkiat Siriwatanachoke, a specialist in policy management, and Miss Karnwarat Kaewsringam, Chiang Rai Province Statistics Officials from the Chiang Rai Meteorological Station and officials from the National Telecommunications Public Company Limited in Chiang Rai Province, has visited the Community Digital Centre. The purpose of the visit was to boost the morale of the staff and to provide operational policies for various projects under the Office of the Digital Economy and Society Commission (CDC).

The visit, held at the Community Digital Centre of Triam Udom Suksa Pattanakarn School in Rop Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai Province, was warmly welcomed by Mrs Suwanna Thima, the deputy director of the school, along with teachers and students. The delegation engaged in discussions about the ongoing and upcoming project operations to enhance the region’s digital technology and ICT infrastructure.

The Community Digital Centre is a crucial initiative designed to bridge the digital divide and promote digital literacy among the local population. During the visit, the officials emphasised the importance of digital technology in transforming educational and community landscapes. The Digital Volunteer Network Development Project (VDO) was a key topic of discussion, highlighting the role of digital volunteers in supporting the community’s digital needs and fostering a culture of technological proficiency.

The VDO project aims to recruit and train digital volunteers who can assist community members in understanding and utilising digital tools and resources. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower individuals with digital skills, enabling them to participate actively in the digital economy. The volunteers play a critical role in educating the community about the benefits of digital technology, including improved access to information, enhanced communication, and opportunities for economic growth.

During the visit, Mr Phuchapong Nodthaisong and his team outlined several key activities and policies to bolster the region’s digital infrastructure. These policies include:

1. Enhancing Digital Literacy: Implementing educational programmes and workshops to improve digital literacy among students and community members. This involves training on basic computer skills, internet safety, and digital tools for everyday tasks.
2. Infrastructure Development: Upgrading the digital infrastructure in schools and community centres to ensure they can access high-speed internet and modern digital devices. This is essential for providing a conducive learning environment and facilitating digital initiatives.
3. Support for Digital Startups: Provide resources and support to budding entrepreneurs to encourage their growth. This includes mentorship, funding access, and networking opportunities with industry experts.
4. Promoting E-Government Services: Facilitating the use of e-government services to make public services more accessible and efficient. This includes training community members on accessing and using these services, thereby promoting transparency and efficiency in government operations.

The visit underscored the National Digital Economy and Society Committee’s commitment to fostering a robust digital ecosystem in Chiang Rai Province. Moving forward, the committee plans to expand its initiatives to include more comprehensive digital education programmes, greater support for technological innovation, and increased collaboration with private sector partners.
