New Zealand: Propelling Taranaki’s Digital Transformation

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

New Zealand is committing to a transformation in the digital sphere. In an era where IT is indispensable for business success, the Western Institute of Technology (WITT) and a private training organisation have announced a strategic partnership to deliver top-tier IT training in Taranaki. This collaboration is set to enhance the region’s digital capabilities, addressing the growing demand for expertise in cyber security, software and web development, digital and game design, and technical support.

Under this partnership, WITT-enrolled students can study at a private training organisation’s central city campus for NZQA-accredited Level 4 and 5 IT diploma programmes. Alternatively, students can continue their studies at the WITT campus, ensuring flexibility and accessibility.

Dr Jan Lockett-Kay, Director of School at WITT, highlighted the significance of this initiative for the local economy. “Having IT graduates who can understand and manage the diverse demands and innovative developments in the digital world is crucial for our local economy,” she stated.

Simon Singh, CEO of the private training organisation, echoed this sentiment, emphasising IT’s pervasive role across sectors. “IT is integral to everything we do. We aim to ensure the current and next generation of digital natives are well-equipped with the latest IT skills and knowledge, benefiting the community in business, education, health, food, and the creative sector. In Taranaki, IT plays a pivotal role in agriculture, conservation, and new energy innovations,” Singh explained.

“In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, technology education is not just a pathway to employment; it’s a vital tool for empowerment and innovation,” Singh said. “Our strategic partnership responds to a global imperative to cultivate a tech-savvy workforce capable of navigating and shaping the future. This initiative represents our commitment to providing cutting-edge, relevant education that equips our learners with the skills necessary to thrive in a digital economy.”

Olivia Hall, WITT Executive Director, described the partnership as a transformative step for local IT education. “Our students can be confident they will receive the best specialist education from a proven provider, along with comprehensive learning support and pastoral care from WITT and Learner Me,” she said. “It’s about preparing our community to meet the challenges of the modern world head-on and ensuring that Taranaki remains at the forefront of technological advancements.”

This collaboration is unique in New Zealand, providing students direct access to the industry through the HQ Group of companies and other technology companies in Taranaki.

WITT and Learner Me will formalise their partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding signing event on May 30th 2024. The programmes will commence in the following semester.

WITT and the private training organisation are positioning Taranaki at the cutting edge of digital technology and ICT development by providing state-of-the-art IT training and fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation. This partnership aims to elevate the region’s IT capabilities and establish Taranaki as a technological innovation and education hub.

Looking ahead, the partnership will explore higher Level 6 and 7 qualifications that delve into AI applications, coding, and other technological advancements, further securing the future of IT training in Taranaki. This commitment to advancing digital education underscores New Zealand’s broader ambition to transform its digital landscape and economy. As Taranaki embraces this new era of digital transformation, the community stands to benefit from enhanced economic opportunities and a robust, tech-savvy workforce ready to tackle the challenges of the future.
