The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is making significant strides in deploying cutting-edge technologies to foster innovation and serve both the nation and the world. Through strategic partnerships, the institution is advancing research and entrepreneurship in the healthcare and energy sectors, demonstrating its commitment to addressing critical global challenges.
In a major initiative to boost healthcare and diagnostic technologies, a leading electronic solutions provider has partnered with the Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (GDC) at IIT Madras to launch the ‘TIIC Accelerator Programme 2024’. This initiative aims to support Indian researchers and start-ups in the healthcare sector, particularly focusing on diagnostics and medical devices.
The ‘TIIC Accelerator Programme 2024’ aims to leverage India’s vast talent pool and creativity to drive innovations in healthcare diagnostics. It will offer targeted support, mentorship, and partnership opportunities, facilitating the growth of promising healthcare technology ventures. Start-ups from various segments, including diagnostic labs, consumables, wearables, and analytics, are encouraged to participate.
Applications will open in June 2024. Selected start-ups will attend an in-person workshop at the IIT Madras campus, followed by an intensive 6-8 week boot camp focused on customer discovery. A business mentorship phase will prepare the shortlisted teams for investment pitches, helping them secure funding and explore collaboration opportunities. The ultimate goal is to catalyse the development of cutting-edge healthcare technologies that can revolutionise the sector and improve patient outcomes.
Simultaneously, IIT Madras is advancing innovation in the energy sector through the launch of the Centre for Energy Research (SICER) in collaboration with a diversified international oil company. This partnership, announced at the company’s Technology Centre in Bengaluru, underscores a significant milestone in academia-industry collaboration.
SICER will centralise research efforts for five years, promoting innovation, development, piloting, and commercialisation of energy technologies. The initiative will address critical challenges in the energy transition, leveraging the expertise and resources of both IIT Madras and the corporate partner. Key areas of focus include carbon capture, renewable energy technologies, green hydrogen generation, and advanced energy storage solutions.
The Energy Consortium at IIT Madras, a recognised Institute of Eminence Center, will play a pivotal role in this collaboration. With contributions from over 50 faculty members and 250 postgraduate students, the consortium aims to accelerate the development of low-carbon technologies and foster a sustainable energy future. The involvement of the company’s Chair Professorship will further enable knowledge exchange and collaboration, enhancing the impact of the research efforts.
IIT Madras is at the forefront of deploying cutting-edge technologies to drive innovation in both healthcare and energy sectors. Through the TIIC Accelerator Programme and the new Centre for Energy Research, the institution is empowering start-ups, fostering research, and addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
At IIT Madras, the pursuit of cutting-edge technology is a vision and embodies the institution’s very ethos. With world-class research facilities and a dynamic academic environment, IIT Madras leads in innovation, leveraging advanced technologies to create groundbreaking solutions across diverse sectors.
OpenGov Asia reported that a start-up incubated at IIT-Madras’ Pravartak Technologies Foundation has launched the Secure IOT microcontroller chip. This marks the first time a microprocessor chip is entirely designed, owned, and marketed in India.
The Secure IOT chip promises high performance and is estimated to be 30% cheaper than comparable market options, potentially revolutionizing the smart electronic device landscape and is a major advancement towards technological self-reliance.
These initiatives highlight IIT Madras’ commitment to leveraging advanced technologies for national and global benefit, ensuring a thriving and sustainable future. By fostering an ecosystem of innovation and collaboration, IIT Madras is not only contributing to technological advancements but also to the overall socio-economic development of India and beyond.
