The Singapore Computer Society (SCS) stands as a cornerstone of Singapore’s tech sector, fostering innovation, collaboration, and professional development among its diverse membership base. At a recent signature event, Mr. Sam Liew, President of SCS, underscored the organisation’s pivotal role in bringing together industry leaders, practitioners, and stakeholders to celebrate achievements and milestones in Singapore’s dynamic tech landscape.
With SCS’s membership reaching an impressive 56,000, Mr Liew expressed his delight at the growing diversity within the organisation. Notably, he highlighted the importance of renewal, observing a healthy mix of seasoned professionals and young talent among attendees. This sense of continuity and evolution reflects SCS’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant and inclusive tech community in Singapore.
Since its inception 56 years ago, SCS has been instrumental in shaping Singapore’s tech workforce, focusing on skills development, innovation enablement, and diversity promotion. Today, the organisation boasts 14 chapters and 5 special interest groups, offering members a wide array of experiences, exposures, and opportunities for growth. The value of these platforms, particularly for younger members who benefit from a more diverse and dynamic ecosystem compared to previous generations, is tremendous.
Beyond skills enhancement, SCS has been at the forefront of championing diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Initiatives like the 100 Women in Tech program highlight the contributions of women leaders in technology while inspiring the next generation of female tech professionals. By advocating for greater gender diversity and inclusivity, SCS aims to create a more equitable and innovative tech sector in Singapore.
The impact of SCS extends far beyond its membership base, contributing significantly to Singapore’s digital economy. With the digital economy generating S$106 billion in value-added, accounting for 17% of the GDP in 2022, Singapore stands as a global leader in tech-driven growth. This success is attributed in part to SCS’s efforts in raising professional standards, fostering innovation, and promoting collaboration across industry sectors.
Despite recent challenges, including geopolitical tensions and regulatory complexities, Singapore’s digital economy remains poised for continued growth. However, Mr Liew acknowledged the need for collective action to address emerging challenges and capitalise on new opportunities. He emphasised the importance of partnerships and alliances in driving Singapore’s tech agenda forward, urging SCS members to play an active role in shaping the country’s digital future.
Looking ahead, SCS aims to reinforce its role as a key advocate and enabler of Singapore’s tech industry. M. Liew outlined three key areas where SCS can make a meaningful impact: advocacy, action, and alliances. As a vocal advocate for the tech industry, SCS will continue to represent the needs and challenges of its members, working closely with the government to drive policy initiatives and reforms.
Moreover, SCS is committed to taking concrete actions to uplift professional standards and address systemic issues within the tech ecosystem. Initiatives like skills-based hiring for ITE and polytechnic graduates demonstrate SCS’s proactive approach to talent development and workforce diversity. By engaging with industry partners and stakeholders, SCS aims to create more inclusive pathways for tech professionals and promote lifelong learning and upskilling opportunities.
Finally, SCS recognises the power of alliances in driving meaningful change and innovation. Through strategic partnerships with companies, associations, and government agencies, SCS seeks to amplify its impact and address complex challenges facing Singapore’s tech sector. Initiatives like the TeSA for ITE and Polytechnic Alliance exemplify SCS’s collaborative approach to workforce development and industry transformation.
The Singapore Computer Society remains a driving force in Singapore’s tech ecosystem, championing innovation, collaboration, and diversity. As Singapore navigates the evolving digital landscape, SCS stands ready to lead the charge, advocating for industry needs, driving action-oriented initiatives, and forging strategic alliances to propel Singapore’s tech industry to new heights of success and sustainability.
