Sunway University and The Logistics & Supply Chain Management Society (LogiSYM), a moving and storage service in Singapore, have forged a strategic partnership aimed at propelling the supply chain discipline in Malaysia to new heights by fostering a robust connection between academia and industry.

Under the stewardship of Dr. Stella Ong Kim Yoke, Associate Dean (Employability, Engagement & Impact) at Sunway Business School, the collaboration between these two entities seeks to raise the bar for the supply chain profession in Malaysia.

Their collective efforts will centre around nurturing collaboration, facilitating knowledge transfer, and initiating research endeavours between academic institutions and industry stalwarts. This symbiotic relationship aims to confront the ever-evolving challenges and opportunities within logistics and supply chain management.

Professor Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University, expressed his eagerness for the collaboration, affirming its significance in aligning educational offerings with industry demands. He stated that this partnership underscores their dedication to delivering a comprehensive, industry-relevant educational experience. Through the partnership, the two aspire to make substantial contributions to the cultivation of proficient professionals within the supply chain sector.

Dr. Raymon Krishnan, President of the moving and storage service in Singapore underscored the imperative of bridging the gap between academia and industry. He stressed enthusiasm for partnering with Sunway University, stating, that by working together, the parties can establish a platform for the exchange of innovative ideas and specialised expertise, thereby fostering the advancement and sustainability of the supply chain profession in Malaysia.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signifies a watershed moment for both Sunway University and the moving and storage service. It marks the commencement of a collaborative journey aimed at mutual enrichment and knowledge dissemination for the progression of the supply chain discipline in Malaysia.

This partnership transcends traditional boundaries, leveraging technological advancements to enhance collaboration and knowledge exchange. Through digital platforms, webinars, and virtual conferences, the two parties aim to democratize access to cutting-edge insights and industry best practices. By harnessing the power of technology, they seek to catalyse innovation, drive efficiency, and empower the next generation of supply chain professionals to navigate the complexities of an increasingly interconnected global landscape.

The partnership aligns with the Malaysian government’s objectives to strengthen the logistics and supply chain sector. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, the initiative addresses key priorities such as human capital development and industry-academia synergy.

Through knowledge exchange, research initiatives, and practical training opportunities, the partnership enhances the skillset of professionals in the supply chain field, contributing to Malaysia’s economic competitiveness. By improving efficiency and effectiveness in logistics, the collaboration supports economic growth and attracts investment, which is vital for Malaysia’s development as a regional hub for trade and commerce.

Ultimately, this partnership exemplifies a concerted effort to elevate standards within the supply chain profession, aligning with the government’s vision for a resilient and thriving logistics ecosystem that drives sustainable economic progress.

According to recent forecasts, the Malaysian logistics market has experienced substantial growth, expanding from around RM 165 billion in 2017 to approximately RM 230 billion in 2022. Projections indicate that this growth trajectory will continue, with the market expected to reach approximately RM 370 billion by 2027.

This is attributed to the increasing demand for food, beverages, and manufacturing products within Malaysia. Notably, the country boasts a network of over 100 airfields, with six international and 16 major domestic airports demonstrating exceptional capacity in both logistics and passenger services. Furthermore, inland ports play a pivotal role in Malaysia’s freight transport system, serving as crucial trade gateways for manufacturers and producers across the nation.
