Vietnam has made significant strides in its artificial intelligence readiness, jumping from 55th place in 2022 to 39th out of 193 countries in 2023, according to a report by a UK-based organisation. This remarkable progress underscores Vietnam’s commitment to embracing AI technologies to enhance public service delivery.
The annual report assesses governments’ preparedness to leverage AI for citizen-centric services, evaluating 39 indicators that gauge digital capacity, technological prowess, and data infrastructure. Vietnam’s total AI readiness score of 54.48 positions it 9th within the East Asia region, although it trails behind some ASEAN peers like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Nevertheless, Vietnam’s score surpasses the East Asia average of 51.41, placing the country 4th among the 9 global regions covered in the report. This achievement reflects Vietnam’s concerted efforts to integrate AI into its socio-economic fabric.
According to an earlier report on Government AI Readiness from the same organisation, Vietnam has made significant strides, elevating its standing to 5th place within the ASEAN region. The report highlights a notable improvement in Vietnam’s average score, which surged from 53.96 points in 2022 to 54.48 points in 2023.
This advancement not only signifies a tangible progression in Vietnam’s preparedness to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) but also reflects the nation’s proactive efforts in bolstering its technological capabilities. Moreover, Vietnam’s ascent to the 5th position marks a noteworthy achievement, overtaking the Philippines and securing a higher ranking compared to the previous year.
In January 2021, the Vietnamese Prime Minister issued a decision outlining the “National Strategy for Research, Development, and Application of Artificial Intelligence until 2030.” This strategic roadmap aims to propel AI research, development, and application, positioning Vietnam as a leading player in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Since then, Vietnam has witnessed widespread deployment of AI technologies across various sectors. Looking ahead to 2030, Vietnam harbours ambitious goals to solidify its position as a regional AI powerhouse. The country aspires to rank among the top four nations in ASEAN and the top 50 globally in AI research, development, and application.
Additionally, Vietnam aims to trademark 10 AI technologies and establish three high-performing national data and computing centres, signalling its unwavering commitment to AI innovation and advancement.
As Vietnam races forward into its digital future, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) emerges as a transformative force in shaping the nation’s technological trajectory. Dang Huu Son, Vice Chairman of the Artificial Intelligence for Industry Development, anticipates a substantial contribution of VND 14 trillion (US$574.83 million) by 2030, highlighting the profound impact of AI on Vietnam’s economy.
The recent establishment of AIID, a collaborative alliance comprising 17 technology-oriented universities and enterprises, underscores Vietnam’s proactive approach to integrating academia and industry. This initiative aims to equip students with practical digital skills, ensuring a well-prepared workforce for the evolving tech landscape and cementing Vietnam’s position as a burgeoning tech hub in the region.
With an impressive 91% of respondents expressing optimism in AI’s potential, as revealed by a survey conducted by Finastra Financial Services, Vietnam solidifies its position as a global trailblazer in harnessing the transformative power of artificial intelligence. As Vietnam’s tech revolution unfolds, marked by remarkable strides in e-commerce and digital payments, the nation stands poised for sustained growth and innovation in the digital age.
In line with its goal toward technological advancement, the central city of Da Nang has unveiled the establishment of the Da Nang Semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Training (DSAC).
This development highlights the city’s dedication to enhancing its proficiency in IC design and AI, aligning with Vietnam’s broader push towards AI readiness as highlighted in the recent global report. The DSAC will play a pivotal role in propelling the city towards its strategic goals, mirroring Vietnam’s aspirations to become a regional AI powerhouse by 2030.
