Taiwan’s ongoing campaign for participation in the United Nations (UN) system has garnered significant international support, reaffirming its global presence and the relevance of its diplomatic efforts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Taiwan has expressed deep gratitude to diplomatic allies, like-minded nations, and friends worldwide for their unwavering support of Taiwan’s aspirations to participate in the UN.
This increased backing comes at a crucial time and underscores Taiwan’s determination to be a meaningful contributor to global peace, stability, and prosperity. Taiwan’s campaign to join the UN has received a remarkable boost from various countries and diplomatic allies. High-level government officials from these allies have vocally advocated for Taiwan during key UN events.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has embraced digital diplomacy as a powerful tool to amplify its voice and garner international support. This approach leverages digital technology, including social media platforms, to communicate Taiwan’s stance on critical international issues.
MOFA has effectively utilised op-eds, articles, and interviews with Taiwanese ambassadors to disseminate its message to a global audience. Also, short films and animations promoting Taiwan’s UN bid have achieved millions of views online, transcending geographical boundaries.
Taiwan’s prowess in the digital economy is a significant asset in its diplomatic endeavours. The country’s thriving technology sector, including semiconductor manufacturing and information technology services, positions Taiwan as a valuable partner for nations seeking to advance their digital capabilities. By showcasing its digital achievements, Taiwan can foster stronger bilateral relationships and cooperation on global digital initiatives.
Besides, Taiwan’s digital diplomacy efforts are not confined to conventional platforms alone. A prime example of its creative approach is the display of a short animation video entitled “UNited—Global Peace with Taiwan” on a prominent Times Square billboard in New York City. This visual spectacle symbolises Taiwan’s aspiration to collaborate with the world in preserving peace and security.
Taiwan’s campaign to participate in the UN system is rooted in the belief that it is a basic right and a shared aspiration of its 23 million citizens. The government of Taiwan remains resolute in pursuing this goal and calls upon the UN to resist external pressure and misinterpretations of key resolutions.
Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts will continue to emphasise the importance of peace, stability, and security across the Taiwan Strait and in the broader international context, aligning with the UN’s principles of inclusivity and global peace.
Further, MOFA cited that Taiwan’s growing international support for its UN participation campaign reflects not only its diplomatic prowess but also its adept use of digital technology to convey its message to the world.
The digital economy, a cornerstone of Taiwan’s strength, enhances its appeal on the global stage. As Taiwan continues to navigate the complex landscape of international relations, digital diplomacy remains a vital tool in its quest to contribute meaningfully to global peace and prosperity.
In addition, Digital Minister Audrey Tang emphasised Taiwan’s commitment to sharing its achievements in promoting digital democracy and responsible AI usage, aligning with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Speaking at the Concordia Annual Summit in New York City, Minister Audrey highlighted the challenges posed to democratic values by AI abuse. She stressed the importance of embracing plurality and collaborative diversity, harnessing digital technology to expand democracy’s reach.
The successful Taiwan-US cooperation and pandemic response, balancing tracking and privacy, showcased the power of digital platforms. Minister Audrey reaffirmed Taiwan’s dedication to ethical deliberative democracy, human rights, and equitable global prosperity.
