Tech Employment Soars in Queensland

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A recent analysis conducted by the Tech Council of Australia (TCA) examined the burgeoning expansion of technology-related employment opportunities in Queensland, underscoring its rapid evolution into a foundational pillar of the state’s economy.

Entitled ‘Prospects of Tech-Related Employment in Queensland,’ the report validates the pivotal role played by the technology sector in propelling the state’s economic landscape, offering gainful employment to a substantial cohort of over 140,000 technology professionals. This statistical trajectory is forecasted to ascend exponentially, surging to an estimated 185,000 by the year 2030, thereby amplifying its magnitude to a staggering three times that of Queensland’s contemporary agricultural sector.

The CEO of TCA affirmed that the report corroborates a long-held sentiment prevalent within the industry. She noted that the consensus within the industry is that Queensland has taken a leading role in driving Australia’s transformative transition towards an economy centred on forward-looking innovation.

Intriguingly, the comprehensive study also highlights that the Queensland tech domain commands a formidable share, constituting approximately 15% of the national technology workforce. This substantiates the presence of an expanse of Software Engineers within the Queensland vicinity, surpassing even the number of Dentists or Bricklayers.

Impressively, vistas of opportunity continue to unfurl at a remarkable pace. The study discloses that tech-centric employment has experienced a more rapid escalation compared to all other vocations in the state, a trend that has held steadfast since the mid-1990s. Notably, the period post the COVID-19 pandemic has witnessed an even more remarkable surge, catapulting the rate to an astounding fivefold of other occupational segments.

The TCA CEO attributed this meteoric surge to the myriad advantages inherently intertwined with tech employment, differentiating them from conventional sectors. The inherent flexibility that defines tech roles makes them exceptionally adaptable. A tech expert can effortlessly switch to working in various industries and geographic locations across the country.

She further elucidated on this phenomenon, underlining the inclusive nature of tech employment which paves the way for a diverse workforce and unlocks opportunities for individuals who may have previously encountered hurdles in other spheres.

The realm of technology provides a fertile environment for skill development, especially advantageous for individuals overcoming employment obstacles, such as women re-entering the workforce or individuals with varying abilities.

The geographical contours of this upward trajectory manifest predominantly in regions proximate to established tech enclaves. Leading this list is North Lakes, situated in the Moreton Bay Region. Ms. Pounder elaborated that this spatial distribution of tech-related opportunities exemplifies the far-reaching impact of the sector on economic expansion.

Due to their inclination toward a specific lifestyle, tech experts frequently migrate to areas outside urban hubs. Consequently, the tech industry acts as a catalyst for generating employment, significantly enhancing communities throughout Queensland, and extending beyond the boundaries of traditional business districts.

The report also underscores the presence of thriving indigenous technology enterprises scattered across the Queensland landscape, such as Go1 in Logan and SafetyCulture in Townsville.

The CEO further extrapolated on the implications of the burgeoning tech sector for Queensland’s economic identity, envisioning a transformative shift in its self-perception. She noted that historically, Queensland’s essence has been closely intertwined with its agricultural and mineral domains, a historical bond deeply ingrained in its heritage. Yet, as Australia aims to emerge as a technological hub in the Asia-Pacific sphere, Queensland’s advantageous geographic position in relation to this region positions it as a natural hub for stimulating worldwide technological advancement.

The comprehensive analysis conducted by the Tech Council of Australia illuminates a transformative narrative unfolding in Queensland’s economic landscape. The surge in tech-related job opportunities not only signifies the state’s robust growth but also reflects a visionary stride towards an innovation-driven future.

As the tech sector flourishes and diversifies, its inclusive nature not only empowers a diverse workforce but also extends a helping hand to those facing career barriers. This seismic shift in employment patterns has the potential to redefine the state’s identity, transcending traditional sectors and propelling Queensland into the vanguard of technological progress.

The report’s findings hold promising prospects for every citizen, offering a spectrum of avenues for skills acquisition, employment enrichment, and community enhancement, ultimately enriching the collective citizen experience as Queensland takes its bold steps into a dynamic and tech-centric future.
