Nelson City Council has launched the Ebus OnDemand application. This application offers passengers a convenient and efficient way to request bus rides using a mobile app or by calling a dedicated number.
Individuals can locate and install the app on their smartphones by searching ‘Ebus OnDemand Stoke’ on their respective app stores. Upon downloading the app, passengers will have the opportunity to create an account for their usage.
Furthermore, for individuals who do not have access to a mobile phone or prefer not to use the app, an alternative and convenient method to request a bus is by reaching out to the Nelson City Council Customer Service team at 035460200. It ensures that all community members can utilise the OnDemand bus service regardless of their access to mobile technology. This approach presents the Nelson City Council’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, as it caters to the population’s diverse needs and ensures that everyone can benefit from the convenience and efficiency of the OnDemand bus service.
According to Alec Louverdis, Group Manager the recently introduced OnDemand bus service may require a brief user adjustment period due to its innovative nature. However, he emphasised that it represents a remarkable improvement over the previous Loop service.
Previously, drawing attention to similar services already in operation in other regions, such as Hawkes Bay, Timaru, and Wellington. Alec noted that OnDemand bus services are gaining popularity nationwide.
Moreover, Alec highlighted that even in Auckland, a major urban centre, the AT Local service operates on a platform, the same organisation behind the Stoke OnDemand service. It is a testament to the reliability and success of transportation solutions’ innovative approach to transportation services.
The optimism surrounding the popularity of OnDemand bus services is evident, and Alec expressed confidence that this concept will continue to grow in demand and acceptance among the public. With other regions already embracing and implementing similar services, the move towards more flexible and efficient transportation options is gaining momentum nationwide.
The current patronage of the loop service in Stoke remains stable, primarily due to its popularity among older adults who benefit from free travel with their Super Gold cards. However, the service’s limited coverage area has been a constraint, reaching only a select number of places. With the introduction of the new eBus OnDemand service, the Nelson City Council anticipates a surge in demand.
The OnDemand service will provide more extensive access, catering to a larger population by operating flexibly based on passengers’ preferred travel destinations rather than adhering to a fixed route that may serve only some of the community.
The eBus OnDemand service offers greater travel possibilities, extending its reach as far as Marsden Valley Road and Monaco. Passengers will enjoy knowing precisely when their bus will arrive, significantly reducing waiting times.
To ensure a smooth transition and understanding of the service, the transport team plans to engage with various community groups, including retirement homes, Blind Low Vision organisations, and the library. This outreach initiative aims to familiarise people with the workings of the OnDemand service before or near the launch day. Although there might be a learning curve for some individuals, the council expresses confidence that, over time, the service will become second nature to the community.
The Nelson City Council is enthusiastic about assessing the performance of the OnDemand service in Stoke and exploring the feasibility of implementing a similar model in other regions within the vicinity. The potential expansion of the service to South or North Nelson showcases the council’s commitment to delivering efficient and easily accessible transportation solutions throughout the city and its neighbouring areas.
By introducing the OnDemand bus service, the council’s overarching goal is to enhance public transportation, increase accessibility, and create a seamless travel experience for the Stoke community.
