Swinburne University recently received an AU$ 5 million grant to establish the cutting-edge Australian Research Council (ARC) Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing in 2023. Under the leadership of Professor Dimitrios Georgakopoulos from Swinburne’s esteemed School of Science, Computing, and Engineering Technologies, the Hub is poised to drive significant advancements in technology and pave the way for commercialisation and widespread adoption by industries. This significant achievement makes Swinburne one of the five selected institutions to receive major ARC Industrial Research Hubs, as announced by the CEO of ARC.

The main objective of the Hub is to spearhead Australia’s digital manufacturing transformation by developing innovative technologies and pathways that will revolutionise the manufacturing landscape. Professor Karen Hapgood, Swinburne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, was among the first to extend her heartfelt congratulations to the talented researchers who secured the funding to lead this visionary initiative.

Drawing upon their profound expertise in computer science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), the team of Swinburne researchers will collaboratively work with industries to accelerate the adoption of new digital manufacturing technologies. By combining the power of people and technology, their efforts aim to create a tangible and real-world impact that will reshape the manufacturing sector in Australia and beyond.

The ARC Research Hub in Future Digital Manufacturing is poised to make a significant impact on manufacturing productivity, resilience, and competitiveness by harnessing the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in digital manufacturing technology.

By aligning with advanced manufacturing priorities and Industry 4.0 principles, the Hub has set ambitious goals to enhance Australian manufacturing productivity and resilience, projecting potential improvements of up to 30%. A primary focus of the Hub’s research will be to develop and implement cutting-edge technology that enables the digital representation, prediction, and optimisation of production processes.

The team of Australian researchers at the Hub, led by Professor Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, will include renowned experts such as Associate Professor Prem Prakash Jayaraman, Professor Suresh Palanisamy, Professor Yang Xiang, and Dr Lily Li. Together, they will pool their expertise to drive innovation and transformative outcomes in the field of digital manufacturing.

To ensure the practical relevance and successful adoption of their research, the Hub will actively engage in co-creation efforts with over 10 prominent industry partners across Australia. This collaborative approach aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge transfer.

By leveraging an open platform and the collective expertise of researchers and industry leaders, the ARC Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing is poised to revolutionise the manufacturing landscape in Australia, propelling it into a more technologically advanced, competitive, and resilient future.

The establishment of the ARC Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing marks a groundbreaking initiative that promises to propel Australia’s manufacturing sector to new heights through advanced technology integration. By harnessing the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), the Hub is poised to revolutionise manufacturing productivity, resilience, and competitiveness.

Led by a team of distinguished researchers from Swinburne University, including experts in computer science and cutting-edge technology, the Hub will pave the way for digitally-driven production processes that can revolutionise the industry. Through active collaboration with leading industry partners and the co-creation of innovative solutions on an open platform, the Hub’s research endeavours will have a tangible real-world impact, driving substantial progress in Australia’s journey towards a tech-driven future of digital manufacturing excellence.
