A*STAR Advancing AI for Healthcare

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR), in collaboration with a healthcare Artificial Intelligence (AI) company with the mission of transforming healthcare through data intelligence, has established a collaborative centre to advance AI research for population health and digital health, with the goal of enhancing healthcare solutions and generating positive patient outcomes.

A collaborative lab initiative attempts to use AI to address diverse healthcare concerns. These are some examples:

  1. Creating a health domain data collecting and wellness score based on behavioural science to stimulate the adoption of healthy behaviours such as diet and mental well-being;
  2. Investigating a health concierge service that uses large language models in a healthcare context;
  3. Using remote health monitoring to detect health issues early, allowing healthcare providers to optimise treatment plans, improve patient outcomes, and improve capacity planning; and
  4. Streamlining diagnostic workflows and improving accuracy to assist clinicians in data interpretation and diagnostic evaluation.

According to Prof Lim Keng Hui, Assistant Chief Executive, Science and Engineering Research Council, A*STAR, the joint lab will serve as a dynamic platform for engagement with the healthcare community and cross-sector alliances.

He added that they will collaborate to advance AI-powered digital health solutions that can improve patient outcomes and population health. This collaboration demonstrates A*STAR’s commitment to developing more AI applications in healthcare to better solve today’s increasing healthcare concerns.

Additionally, the combined lab will help to meet Singapore’s healthcare needs through the following initiatives:

  • R&D in technologies aimed at tackling industry-specific challenges for population health and digital health;
  • Pilot testing and deploying innovative AI-driven medical data processing, secure data technologies for validated practical applications outside laboratory settings, increasing confidence levels to pave the way for large-scale adoption by stakeholders;
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing amongst the healthcare communities by organising workshops, seminars or conferences that bring together researchers, industry professionals and ecosystem stakeholders.

The collaboration will launch a S$10 million initiative to create a platform to facilitate multi-institutional, cross-border collaborations in digital health. This initiative will be led by A*STAR’s Institute of High-Performance Computing (IHPC).

The platform intends to address the regulatory restrictions and concerns associated with cross-entity and cross-border data sharing. By integrating secure data technologies such as AI-driven federated learning, healthcare organisations can retain sensitive data within their own IT infrastructures rather than transmitting it to a central server.

The platform seeks to facilitate efficient collaboration among local and international healthcare providers, research institutions, and healthcare companies to co-create innovative healthcare solutions.

The joint laboratory is a strategic partnership with the potential to transform patient outcomes on a global scale. Using artificial intelligence, advanced data processing techniques, and technologies that protect privacy. Additionally, the partnership intends to stretch the limits of what is possible in population health and digital health.

In the healthcare industry, advances in AI for population and digital health present significant benefits and transformative potential. The increased efficiency that AI brings to healthcare delivery is a significant advantage.

AI systems can streamline processes by automating routine duties and analysing large datasets, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care. This increased efficiency can contribute to better outcomes, shorter wait times, and a better allocation of resources within healthcare systems.

In addition, AI in Population and Digital Health provides data-driven insights that can inform decision-making, research, and policy development based on empirical evidence. The immense quantities of healthcare data can be analysed by AI algorithms to extract valuable insights that can assist healthcare professionals in making informed decisions and developing effective strategies.
