The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is using cutting-edge technologies to propel the growth of smart cities and smart mobility and to provide innovative solutions for society. Recently, three of PolyU’s projects have been granted funding of approximately HK$8.42 million in the latest round of approved projects from the Smart Traffic Fund.
One of the projects that received funding recently concentrates on creating software that optimises the planning and scheduling of new energy buses to establish an eco-friendly travel experience and encourage the advancement of new energy public transport.
The other two projects are related to the creation of a connected advanced driver assistance system that offers predictive warnings and driving recommendations for enhanced driving safety, as well as a human-machine cooperative driving system that monitors driving conditions and boosts driving safety by estimating real-time driving risks.
The Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU stated that the Smart Traffic Fund has played a significant role in driving innovation for sustainable transportation development. These funded projects exemplify PolyU’s dedication to making a positive impact in society by addressing social needs with the help of advanced technologies. Looking ahead, PolyU will continue to lead innovative research in the transportation industry.
Since the Smart Traffic Fund was launched by the HKSAR Government in November 2021, a total of 36 projects have received funding, out of which 14 are led by PolyU, amounting to an approved funding of around HK$45.9 million. Through consistent contributions, PolyU has been at the forefront of funding achievements.
PolyU’s previously funded projects have used a range of advanced technologies to forecast and manage different traffic conditions. These include using artificial intelligence to predict available parking spaces, employing deep learning models to forecast traffic data, utilizing 3D geospatial models for driving simulation safety evaluation, and using intelligent automation technology to assess driver behaviour and mental state.
PolyU’s continuous contributions to innovative research in the transportation industry have helped address social needs and promote sustainable development. With the latest funding from the Smart Traffic Fund, PolyU can further advance its mission of creating a positive impact in society through the application of advanced technologies. As PolyU remains at the forefront of transportation research, we can expect to see more innovative solutions to transportation challenges in
