A new AI report has ranked India first in terms of AI skill penetration rates, followed by the United States and Germany. The AI skill penetration rate is a metric that measures the prevalence of various AI-related skills across occupations. The nation tops the list in the relative AI skill penetration rate across gender for 2015-22.
The report analyses the performance of world nations in research and development, technical performance, technical AI ethics, the economy, education, public and governance, diversity, and public opinion.
The report indicates that there has been a significant increase in the quantity of AI publications between 2010 and 2021, with the total number more than doubling from 200,000 to almost 500,000. During the past 12 years, the United States and China had the highest number of collaborations.
The percentage of AI conference publications in South Asia saw a noticeable rise in the past 12 years, growing from 3.6% in 2010 to 8.5% in 2021. Mirroring trends are seen in other parts of the research and development section; India’s share of AI conference publications is also increasing.
In 2022, the United States produced the greatest number of significant machine learning systems with 16, followed by the United Kingdom (8) and China (3). India stands 7th, with only one system. Furthermore, the country stands 9th with two authors producing significant machine learning systems. Also, last year, for the first time, researchers from Canada, Germany, and India contributed to the development of large language and multimodal models.
In terms of private investment in AI by geographic area, India ranks 5th on the 2022 list and 6th for the period between 2013 and 2022. Additionally, the country is placed 5th for the number of newly funded AI companies in 2022 and 7th for the 2013-22 period.
As per country-level data on robot installations, India was ranked 10th. However, in terms of the annual growth rate of industrial robots installed by the country between 2020 and 2021, India ranked 5th. 71% of Indian respondents believe that products and services using AI have more benefits than drawbacks, which has put India in the 3rd position in the public opinion index after China and Saudi Arabia.
In December, OpenGov Asia reported that India ranked 32nd among 181 nations in the AI Readiness Index 2022. It outlined the country’s several initiatives aimed at embedding AI use throughout all levels of government and society, as well as ensuring that technological developments reinforce India’s place in the international realm.
For example, its draft National Data Governance Framework aims to transform and modernise the government’s data collection and management processes and systems. The government also announced that it would train three million government officials in AI and other emerging technologies. Other initiatives include India’s Semiconductor Mission, which seeks ‘to drive the long-term strategies for developing sustainable semiconductors and display ecosystem.’
The AI Readiness Index splits the world into nine regions based on a combination of the UN and the World Bank regional groupings. For each region, a regional analysis is included. The analysis is based on a combination of interviews held with regional experts, index scores, and desk research. South and Central Asian insights were provided by the government’s AI portal, INDIAai.
