The software learns to mimic the grading process used by humans when grading papers. Machine learning, in conjunction with Artificial Intelligence, enables the paper grader to automatically assign grades to papers.
The AI software combines human comprehension and machine learning. The AI grading software collects grading assignment metrics from papers graded by teachers or professors. The software system saves this manual grading information in order to update its grading metrics.
With his essay grading app, a computer science senior from The Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Manila finished first runner-up in the education vertical of the Impact 5G Hackathon. The student had represented the university in a competition against a team of students and professionals from across the country.
“Hackathons usually judge winners based on their work’s innovativeness and not just relevance. This is what differentiated the app and eventually captured the interest of the jury,” said T.I.P. Information Technology Programme Chairman.
The app, which is powered by artificial intelligence, reads and grades essays based on keywords entered. The higher the score an essay receives, the more keywords it satisfies. The app can be used in both the classroom and the workplace.
An AI paper grader quickly completes the grading process for all papers, ensuring that no one’s time is wasted waiting for the results. The possibility of manipulating results through external inferences is eliminated with a paper grader. Examining organisations also do not need to hire staff to check papers because the AI grader does so efficiently.
“We have automated test checkers for multiple choice exams but none for essay types. Based on research, teachers just usually look for keywords. The essay grading app does that job and instantly rates a printed or online paper, saving instructors time and energy. Companies can likewise use it for job hiring and customer service initiatives,” the student explained.
The essay grading app developed by the student for the entire three days of the competition is now available for incubation under Impact 2050 for further improvements. The Impact 5G Hackathon is the country’s longest-running hackathon. Collaboration across industries is essential for innovation to take flight and new technologies to flourish.
