Training the workforce with digital skills is in progress across many organisations. This is in efforts of acclimating the workforce to the 4th wave of the industrial revolution.
This is a task however as many lacks prior digital skills. Hence schools are now bringing programmes such as degree and diploma courses to equip students with these skills and knowledge and get them ready.
Republic Polytechnic (RP) is one such school which does that. It is to launch an Applied Artificial Intelligence programme in January 2020.
Some of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills that will be taught are natural language understanding, speech generation and recognition, and vision understanding. This programme has been specially designed for potential students who have no ICT backgrounds but are keen on transitioning to ICT jobs.
Mr Seow Khee Wei a programme lecturer, says the programme will shape and grow future engineers from having basic knowledge of AI to being experts who are equipped with the skills for building deep learning predictive models for AI solutions that display human-like behaviour and intelligence.
This AI programme will be spread across 10 modules: Principles of Machine learning, Deep learning Explained, Computer Vision and Image Analysis, Speech Recognition Systems and Natural Language Processing.
This new course is structured to provide students with the necessary skills and basic knowledge of AI to meet the rising demand for AI professionals across industries.
This programme is designed together by AI Singapore and Microsoft Singapore and supported by Infocomm Media Development Authority under the TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) Tech Immersion and Placement Programme.
TeSA is an initiative of SkillsFuture which is focused on developing and nurturing a trained and skill-equipped information and communications technology (ICT) workforce for Singapore’s growing digital economy.
The programme will run over 12 weeks and will focus on key areas such as the basic knowledge of AI, implementation of guidelines, law, statutes, and regulations on the proper handling of data at the different stages of their life cycle.
Compliance with data policies can be observed and opportunities for new and emerging technology to boost business operations can be distinguished.
The programme will end with an industry capstone project, allowing participants to apply their knowledge into practical work.
Students of this programme will graduate with a Professional Certificate of Completion in Applied Artificial Intelligence from Republic Polytechnic (in collaboration with AI Singapore and Microsoft).
These graduates can move on to jobs such as being an AI application developer, AI system integrator and AI or Machine Learning Engineer (entry level).
“As more and more industries leverage on the power of AI to increase productivity, the world will need more talents that will be able to implement and leverage AI technology to help achieve this,” said Mr Seow.
